@grtd2010 My son has 4.4 GPA. Sorry, I will not post his ACT/SAT, to show consideration and respect and love for him…plus I do not want to take away a dream from someone else. B/C I don’t want someone think they need a perfect ACT in order to get into Stanford (just an example)
We are not expecting anything from any college. We are just delighted that many top colleges would easily be affordable for us… feel blessed. :-*
@2sunny My DD has also applied to CMU in CS. She has applied to a wide range of schools. She has also applied to several accelerated BS/MD programs. My DD is a NMF. Hopefully, we will make a good choice in April 2017.
So which is it? Are you looking for a full ride or are you going to pay $100,000 plus transportation? If you can pay $100,000 then why are you so concerned with merit to the point you you complain about schools that aren’t “true full rides?”
Nowhere have I said anything thing about FORCING a kid to go anywhere.
@3scoutsmom You also made another incorrect statement --you implied that I am concerned about GPA
to maintain a scholarship as NMF. I NEVER said that… I simply stated that each college has requirements,
some have 3.0 GPA…and others are 3.5 GPA. I was giving out information, so that others could be informed. So, once you again, you made incorrect assumption about someone else… :-*
@grtd2010 I just liked your post, because you are sincere, honest and you support other parents.
We will visit KY for the merit weekend soon! And who knows: that could be the dream!! We will know after we visit, and after we see what happens with other choices. :-*
@3scoutsmom $100,000? If OP is expecting that much in institutional aid, definitely wonder about any real understanding of institutional aid being reduced when scholarships are added.
@3scoutsmom here is what I said; “Carnegie Mellon does not give full rides, but it is Ranked #1 in world (tied with MIT for CS). Carnegie would be at least $100,000, plus books/travel”
So that means, that we would have to pay around $25,000 per year. If we paid that $25,000 per year for Carnegie, that is just a tad higher than Ohio State per year. So, if someone said I could go to Carnegie for $100,000 for everything,or to OSU for $90,000 for everything, then I pick Carnegie in a heartbeat!
Perhaps, you misunderstood that I did not want to take away a child’s dream. What I meant is that
if a child’s dream was to go to Vanderbilt, then I would have my child apply there…if he got in and IF
the college came back with nice offer, I would be able to afford that dream ! :-*
@3scoutsmom Full Ride for state school vs $100,000 for a private college? that is what u want to know, right?
we applied to both options, b/c we do not know, yet. We won’t know until we get into that private college. Then, we visit and get impression of it. Most likely, we won’t get in, since accept. rates are SUPER LOW.
I can say to go to Princeton for $100,000 total is a GREAT deal, and a beautiful DREAM! :-*
@patsmom Sorry for all the confusion ! This thread was started to offer support and congratulations to NMF and to celebrate! And maybe to gather info. about colleges / dreams/ etc.
does anyone have a dream to share? and a college that is happy for your child?
@sunny didn’t you say you say you wouldn’t Texas Tech, a true full ride that covers travel and expenses, that you claimed did not exist, based on the require 3.5 gpa required to maintain it when others only require 3.0 to maintain GPA? Why bring maintaining GPA up if you are not concerned with it?
Do you really think you need to bring up irrelevant information to “inform” others, plenty of other schools have have high GPA requirements to maintain scholarships what’s your point if you aren’t concerned with it GPA?
@3scoutsmom That 3.5 GPA is not irrelevant to ALL people. Maybe you don’t care about 3.5 GPA for OOS,
but do you think it might be important if the OOS went there, and then got a 3.0 GPA and then LOST ALL of the Full Ride ! How sad! That is NOT a dream come true… do u now understand that it could be VERY important -----
and for those going into specific majors, they would understand all of this…
@2sunny which is it, is GPA is a factor for you or not when did this go from you looking for information for Your child to YOU PROVIDING information to everyone else?
@3scoutsmom I was responding to you prior to that–
19
@2sunny you have the funds for Carnegie Mellon but not for a few air plane tickets full ride/close to full ride schools? Or are you expecting a full ride at CM too?
So, then I told u that some may need to consider the Time/$$ to Travel
If you recall I was replying you because you asked me about DETAILS, and then you asked DETAILS
about ACT/SAT costs and Apps… Hmmm… thank you for asking me about details in Travel, Books,
and cost to apply to each school .
So yes, I now about Full Rides, and I know about GPA and I know about
the bottom line: Where is kid happy for hi dream? I focus on WHERE he wants to be, not
on stuff like the cost of the App
And I was never expecting a full ride from CM, b/c we reviewed the College BEFORE applying…
Perhaps, you can try and support others, instead of going back into the past about
stuff. Perhaps, you can motivate others to dream, to believe and to move into the future! :-*
