National Merit Scholars at USC Columbia

USC just increased the award for Lieber Scholars to $10,000 per year, plus oos tuition waiver. Must apply by Dec. 1 and name them first choice.

Webbie
My S is there now with a Lieber.I have no information, nor does the website that the Lieber has increased from 6,000 to 10,000.Where have you gotten your info from?
Also, the Lieber is not one of the scholarships that has the Dec 1 deadline. It is automatically given to NMF's,they do not have to fill out the Honors Scholarship app (for McNair or Carolina scholarships). As well, you have until the NM Corp deadline to indicate them as your #1 choice, way past Dec 1.

Just got letter/brochure sent to NMSF indicating Lieber was $10,000. I think, will have to check, it indicated you must apply by Dec. 1. They probably won't raise it retroactively to current students.

Sorry cathymee, I was correct in my original post. Via postcard, $10,000 for 4 years if named nmf, list usc-columbia as first choice and apply by Dec. 1. Maybe things have changed since your son applied.

Excellent news for you!
Hes only a freshman so its his first semester. He has other scholarships that equal his cost of attendance, so no problem for him if its not retro...they would just rebalance the other amounts anyway.
In fact, most everybody in the Honors College has more than one scholarship. For example, most Liebers also have a Cooper,if they dont have a McNair or Carolina.
Its the Honors College Scholarship app that has the Dec 1 due date.Check the NMF rules, you have more time than Dec 1 to list them(or any college) as your first choice.
I guess they havn't updated their web site info yet.
Good luck on that application!!

Lest anyone reading this post be confused, let me restate it once more.

The post card says "We have $40,000 just waiting for you, if ... you're a National Merit Finalist ... you list USC - Columbia as your first choice with the National Merit Scholarship Corp... YOU APPLY FOR ADMISSION TO USC by December 1, 2006 and are admitted. ..."

Don't have to be listed with NMFS, yet, but do need to apply by Dec. 1.

You need to apply to USC for ALL of their significant merit scholarships by December 1.

Can anyone tell me when S will find out if he has been accepted into
the Honors Program. He submitted his application by the deadline.

Helpermom
If I recall the timeline, his general college acceptance will come first, then the Honors acceptance, then info on any scholarships he may be eligible for.But the general and Honors acceptance will be in separate mailings,so don't panic!!
