Sorry, I tried to do a search for this but the search function isn't working. I will call the Scholarship Office on Monday but if anyone can help answer this now based on past experience, I would really appreciate it. The admissions website says

"If you are interested in qualifying for an academic scholarship, it is very important for you to meet the December 1 priority application deadline. If you are interested in competing for Carolina, McNair, or Lieber Scholars awards, we strongly encourage you to apply no later than November 15, and be sure to complete the Honors College/Top Scholars application supplement along with your USC Undergraduate Application"

The scholarship website says

"The University Honors College and Scholarship Application must be returned to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, postmarked by December 1. The postmark date applies to both South Carolina residents and non-South Carolina resident students."

And the Honors College page says

" Be sure to mail it to the admissions office at the address below no later than December 1, 2006 but preferably by November 15, 2006. Students who are selected to compete for the Carolina and McNair Scholars awards will be notified in early February and will visit campus later that month for personal interviews.

I know on this site some parents have indicated Dec. 1st. The admissions website wording would indicate Nov 15. Everything else would indicate Dec. 1st. Can anyone help me clear up this ambiguity based on past experience? Sure would be nice if daughter had Thanksgiving to work on this since down and out with illness this whole past week.

We found with our last two boys, yeah, it was important to have things in on time and yeah, they were firm about it. I would think even more so at large competitive colleges. I would shoot for the deadline, hassle your counselors, but call the college anyway and work on making a personal connection with someone on the staff there. You would be surprised how much gets lost at the large competitive schools so having someone to call and who may remember you helps. Part of the process I think involves an interview too. They have a timeline and believe me, there is plenty of competition.

My S is there now as a McNair finalist freshman. They prefer the Nov 15 th date but will accept up until the Dec 1st date. For more info, call specifically to Heather Wheeler in the Admissions Office on Monday, shes responsible for the special scholarship applicants.
And Good Luck...try not to be intimidated by the application its worth it!!!

zixxa, Besides the McNair, there are other scholarships called the McKissick and the Coopers (both for oos students). McKissick gets you in-state tuition plus $2000 a yr. The Coopers award gets you in-state tution plus $4000 per year. These are not as competitve as the McNair/Carolina awards. S was offered the Coopers and also a place in the Capstone program that carried another $1500/yr in scholarship money. Two or three other kids in his grad. class got the McKissick. There was no application at all for these. It was all based on the regular app. for admission with transcript and SAT score.

Thanks for all the help. Dtr spoke with admissions and asked if mailing by the Dec 1st deadline would have any detrimental effect on McNair consideration compared to Nov 15 applicants. Answer was it would have no effect - Dec 1st would still receive full consideration.

She did say that "everyone at USC sounds so warm and inviting". Guess we are good to go.
