national merit scholarship finalist program

I live in New York City and I got the letter yesterday and the admissions reception thing today.

I'm ecstatic. :)

I hope this -is- a sign. The dates make sense.. so maybe?

I didn't receive any snail mail from NYU either, freezenthaw...

Did ALL the CAS applicants get that NMF email?

i guess so

no letter for me...this e-mail mustn't have had much significance..sigh

nothing here either...i'm kind of starting to lose hope =(

I can't imagine all CAS applicants got the email or there would be more posts here

I speculate from the wording that they sent it to all folks that they are seriously considering for merit aid (stated to be 5% somewhere on nyu.edu)

The NMF validation query is presumably so that they can invite the NMFs into the Baird Program designed for them (see link above)

This NMF step may be needed due to the arcane methods NMSC apparently employs for distributing finalist names (I think NYU is only notified of those who selected it first choice, and then only 3/1, 4/1, 5/1 etc.)

Finally, and most importantly:

My son got the snailmail "Congratulations" letter this morning. He is very happy.

RA

I got the email, but no congratulations letter. Here's the most unusual part of the email:

"National Merit Scholarship Finalists who confirm their status will receive additional information and an invitation to a CAS scholars programs during the last week in March. Please note that members of the CAS Admissions Committee will not be able to confirm the amount of your scholarship; your financial aid package will reflect your scholarship award.

We look forward to welcoming you to a CAS scholars program in September!"

That seems like an odd thing to say if some of the people receiving the email are not accepted. On the other hand, no one has posted here saying they haven't gotten that email yet. I really don't know what to make of it.

My stats, by the way, are pretty average, so if I do get accepted it will be a huge surprise for me. My SAT scores are slightly above the NYU average and my GPA is slightly below. My ECs are rather ordinary, but consistent, and with some leadership positions. Again -- and not to bring anyone down -- but it would be surprise if I was accepted. Maybe they're sending this to people who got GSPed, too?

I received the card in the mail (and invitation to an admitted student day). I am a NMF but did not receive an e-mail. I'm wondering if I should call to confirm that I have achieved finalist status or... We'll see, especially since I would love to go to NYU, but it would be very dependent on the aid that I can get.

WHAT
is wrong

i called the admissions office, and they have my application and everythign is in order but that doesnt change the fact that i still never got any emails from nyu. the admissions counselor told me that my spam filter probably blocked it out.. but that doesnt seem very likely. i'm a national merit finalist and i would like to think i have decent qualifications.... but neither a postcard nor an email regarding national merit scholarships.

not fair... i dont know what's up. maybe it was my first semester grades.

wait..im a NMF and i never got an email..?!

Had you already designated NYU as your first choice college with NMSC?

nope.. did everyone else who got an email do that?

Well, unless you were sure you were going there, I wouldn't. :P

I was asking about the NM college designation thing to try to figure out who NYU was querying.

NMSC was supposed to send out a list 3/1 to colleges of NMFs who had selected them as first choice. So NYU would know those names for sure and not need to send the email.

Another set of names would be those who noted on their apps that they were NM semi-finalists. I think NM also had sent out the SF list to all colleges. So that is a second set who they did have to query to validate that they succesfully moved up to finalist.

And the third set is just good candidates who they are thinking of giving merit aid or honors to.

They seem to have sent the email to the at least the second and third sets.

All this folderol would presumably be done so they can accurately assign NMFs to the Baird program which seems to be reserved exclusively for them while giving other honors to the other candidates.

Just some inferences from the responses here and the discussion of last year's Baird letter above.

RA

PS I talked to nice person in the NYU finaid office about three weeks ago and she assured me that even if NYU is NOT designated as first choice initially, NYU and NMSC will allow (and require) re-designation to NYU to get the scholarship money. She said this can be done AFTER invitation to the Baird program. Please do not take this as gospel -- I do not have this in writing. YMMV. Please contact NYU directly if this may affect you.

wow thanks for that. Guess I'm in that third set then :)

Accepted today. This e-mail definitely means youre in!

There are a few days that you never forget. Maybe this is one for you, Freeze. Nice going and maybe we'll see you around the campus.

RA

congrats, Freezenthaw!!

i'm really really hoping that you're right about the email thing...but I haven't gotten anything yet. aahhh this wait is killing me!

just be patient daria...it'll come soon!

Yeah, considering that I got this email and I just got into NYU today... and I'm not a likely candidate for NYU at ALL... I'm guessing that everyone who got this email is in. Just wait another day or so...
