So just yesterday I got in the mail a letter from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation regarding both the College Plans Reporting Service (CPRS) and my selection as either a commended or semi-finalist (I'm betting commended because of 217 in California :( )

Anyways, who else received this letter and also, it says that the College Plans Reporting Service (CPRS) can refer you or whoever got the letter to two colleges of one's choice. Is this thing legitimate or is it just like the college selection service thing where they hammer you with spam e-mail? Also, what colleges are you guys putting for this?

Be SURE that you want colleges to associate the particular score with your name. If you do a get a score you’re not particularly proud of, don’t send it just yet. You can always add it in your profile later :)

Oh and you might want a better opinion because I’m an international student.

i’m fairly sure the letter doesn’t have anything to do with whether you’re selected as a semifinalist–collegeboard sends a copy to the top 50,000 scorers. so the letter itself doesn’t mean you will be selected, but to be selected in the future as a semifinalist you (almost certainly) will have received the letter you’re talking about. (i got the letter as well.)

You might want to search the CC archives because this issue comes up every year about this time…

The designation of 2 colleges at this point means very little to your future status in the NMSC competition – or to your college applications. All NMSC will do at this point is send a notice to the colleges you listed, saying that “XXX has scored among the top 4% and has indicated an interest in your school” – together with an attachment that has the names of all the other students who have done the same.

Some schools will respond by adding you to their marketing list, and you will begin to receive mailings and other info from the school. Other schools will totally ignore it.

If a school that you are truly interested in applying to next fall is also one that is known to track “interest” and use it as a factor in evaluating applicants, then there might be some benefit (albeit slight) to naming them now.

I got my letter a few weeks ago and haven’t yet reported my score to any colleges. I’m looking at schools that offer scholarships for National Merit. (215, Arizona).
