I've read that the cut-off for commended NM scholars is 202; if you receive a letter from the College Board in the spring of your Junior year, you're at least a commended NM scholar & perhaps more.

I never got a letter but my score is definitely official and over the 202 line.

Thanks captain obvious ;)

You can contact College Board via e-mail or their phone number to get confirmation that you're commended. The quicker method would be to check with your HS GC, who SHOULD have been notified & alerted the students at your HS.

Thanks, I will follow through with calling college board. I would simply check with my GC, but she happens to be hundreds of miles away at another school :) I was also avoiding calling or emailing her because I did not ask for her recommendation and instead asked my new counselor. Heh.

This is a bit off topic, but exactly how much does national semi-finalist status help you/non national semi-finalist hurt you?

When you are named a semifinalist, you will start receiving a lot of mail from colleges that really, really want to attract NMSF. Lots of scholarship and honors college offers. Not from the most selective colleges, but more on the lines of LSU, Arizona, Tulsa, Texas A&M, Southern Mississippi, Florida, etc.

I'm pretty sure that the MS cut-off was 205.

"This is a bit off topic, but exactly how much does national semi-finalist status help you/non national semi-finalist hurt you?"

I think the cut off depends on your state - here is was about 214, up one point from last year for semi finalist, I think commended was about 206.

I'm excited about this, even though so many people disparage it...it means I've at least accomplished SOMETHING that I set my mind towards, and, you've gotta admit, it's appealing to colleges. It's not like there's many of us!

can anyone post this year psat's curve for reasoning and writing? thanx

How much NMSF helps you (or not) depends a great deal on what schools you're applying to. Some schools are actively recruiting NMSFs & NMFs for their stats & offer generous merit aid.

Other schools (including many competitive, highly selective schools) are pretty indifferent to whether you happened to be NMSF or NMF or not. Basically, you have to meet their threshhold in GPA & standardized test scores, & then they look at the rest of your ap.

Some schools (including UCs, all ivys & many other colleges) offer NO money for NMF, while others offer merit amounts of $500-2000 (sometimes per year or sometimes just as a one-time amount), while some very generous schools offer up to full tuition & room & board & sometimes for for all 4 years (as long as you meet minimum GPA standards).

The CollegeBoard has now posted the statistics from last spring's AP tests. Here are the summary statistics nationally and broken down by state:

gggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggg

Something in that score cut off chart for 2005 looks incorrect.
California's cut off for the last time was raised a point to 217. I know because my sons score was 216. Would have been a semi any other year.

My D was told her PSAT score at school today, but didn't get any other information. Shouldn't she get more than that?

She should get a score report sheet that shows which questions she missed. You can go to this site and see the timetable for everything else.

If you mean about National Merit info, then no...as I recall, we didn't get any additional information until about May of last year...and that was still "your scores indicate you may be eligable for National Merit..." blah blah blah. We didn't get any real scholarship stuff until this September, semifinalists came out in like October or November, and Finalist comes out in January.

I just got my PSAT results back and got a 220, so next year I'll be named a semi-finalist for NY.

Check

for details...
