So my primary goal in my college search has been to leave my state. While I have two full ride in state offers, I really want to move and use this opportunity to live in a new place. I’m very independent and my parents WILL pop in constantly if I stay in state. It happened to my sister. I really want to go north, so I’m looking at U Maine Honors College and U Idaho. While my parents would help me afford a private school, I think it would be silly to go tens of thousands of dollars in debt when I could go to these schools tuition free. They would also offer me financial independence, as I wouldn’t be in debt to my parents. Does anyone have any information on these schools? Academically? Socially? Location?
Apply to Alabama…
NMF’s get:
5 years of free tuition (you can use the extra semesters toward summer abroad.)
1 year free housing
4 years of a $3500/year stipend
Technology allowance
$2k study abroad funds
What state are you from?
Seriously look at UA. We have a student in 3rd year of eng; honors college has very good programs; lots of high stat kids and lots of OOS kids so many good things available for you.
What do you want to study and what are your professional goals?
I kind of ruled out Alabama purely because of location. I love to snowboard/ski/hike/camp and I didn’t think the South fit me. I’ll look into Alabama some more because I know they have great opportunities for NMS/F. I was really looking to move back north @SOSConcern @mom2collegekids
What is your major and career goal?
I’m not decided, but I am interested in the Forestry program at UM and also interested in Anthropology UG/Arch G. I’m 17. I don’t think I have a clear picture of a career yet. @mom2collegekids
There are things like school breaks etc. During fall and spring school terms, you need to sort of focus on school. But kids at UA do plenty of hiking and other outdoor stuff; plenty of opportunities to go on ski and other trips during school breaks.
Honestly you have to look at what a school/campus can offer you with education and quality of school experience. UA is a beautiful campus, with a lot of OOS students - so it offers a lot for students in many aspects.
Alabama has some beautiful state parks and there is a nice park and river/outdoor area right near campus.
Take a look at Alabama’s Outdoor Rec program. No snowboarding, but lots of hiking, kayaking, cave exploration.

If proximity to mountains is important, try for the Presidential Scholarship at Montana State.
For what it’s worth, Idaho is conservative, fratty, and pretty far from skiing. Their forestry program is good. My kids’ experiences (different college) are that there is little time for all-day outings like ski trips.
Is Utah not on your radar? If you are NMF material you would be looking at presidential type stats, andit is WUE.
my daughter is a national merit semi-finalist. She is looking at and has been accepted to University of Idaho and University of Maine. She is wanting to major in wildlife management. We live in Arkansas, and she, like you, is looking for a new adventure. We have a trip planned to Idaho in March to visit Moscow and the campus. We have sort of put Maine off the list for now, because Idaho is a full ride and Maine is tuition only. Have you visited either school? We will update you when we return from our trip to Idaho. We are flying into Portland because it is SOOOO expensive to fly from Arkansas to Spokane, WA. Spokane is the closest large airport to University of Idaho. We will rent a car and then have a little road trip to Moscow which is 5-6 hours away. depending on where you live, travel expenses will add up!
@arkiemom Let me know how ID is! I won’t be visiting.
