Northeastern Schools

Do any of the bigger northern state schools (UConn, Rutgers, Penn State, UVM, UDel, UNH) give good out of state scholarships? I wanna major in biochemistry and have a 31 ACT with a 95 unweighted, 98 weighted. I will graduate with having taken 12 college courses and 10 of those being APs plus lots of extracurriculars/ leadership. I live in NY and plan to apply to 2 (maybe 3) SUNYs, but I feel that my surrounding states have state schools that are more my style.
Where else do you think I could get in with pretty decent scholarships in the region? Just poking around. Thanks!

What can your parents afford to pay? How much money do you need? What style are you looking for?

Have you researched the scholarships at these schools? I would remove Penn State. UConn gives OOS merit but it’s not guaranteed and it may not be enough.

I believe Delaware does. Try to up your ACT to a 32 or higher… Maybe Temple.

I don’t think Delaware gives hige awards anymore to OOS…if they do, my guess is that they are looking for higher stats. They may give some money but it might not be enough. We need to know what this student needs the final cost to be. Temple is a good idea. So is URI.

OP I would look at Binghamton.

The Net Price Calculator for UVM at least when we ran it several years ago did accurately predict the likelihood of a merit scholarship.

I would like to get any school down to SUNY price.
I plan on applying to Binghamton & Buffalo. Contemplating on Albany and/or Geneseo .

@twogirls I’ve heard so many bad things about URI, lots of people transfer out.

What about UMaine??

Or UMass?

Will your family qualify for financial aid? It is going to be very difficult for you to find schools in the northeast that will give you enough merit aid to match SUNY. You may get $12,000-15,000 at UConn if you are lucky, but that won’t bring the cost down to SUNY. Would you consider leaving the northeast? You may want to check out what is needed for Alabama…they are very generous with merit and there are many OOS students there. Are you able to take the ACT again?

Del does, but I’m not sure what stats you need.

U Maine Orono will match your state flagship price, I believe. UVM does give OOS aid, but I don’t think enough to get down to SUNY in-state price.
Penn State doesn’t give any OOS merit.

I believe UMass gives some merit, but you will need about $25,000 in order to match SUNY. I don’t see that happening. You might try Pitt. Merit isn’t guaranteed and I don’t know if your scores are high enough, but it’s worth looking into.

Binghamton and Geneseo are very good schools and they appear to be affordable. Why would you dismiss such strong academic schools? Take a look at Vermont and see what it has to offer.

@twogirls I will definitely qualify for fin aid. I don’t really wanna leave the NE because I don’t wanna have to worry about travel costs. I also don’t really wanna take the ACT again because I feel like my score is fine. I wanted to look at some other schools because the issue w/most of the SUNYs is that there is little to no school spirit/sports life. I feel like Buffalo would be the only one that really matches the social sphere I’m looking for. I don’t really plan on applying to OOS public schools, but I was just curious if any of them offer $ with the stats I have.

I don’t know your family finances, your efc, your income etc…but try the net price calculator for Lehigh and see if the cost comes down enough for you. If your family is lower income you should use the NPCs for schools that meet full need. Can your family afford SUNY? Will you qualify for Excelsior or the NYS STEM award?

You want schools that have sports/spirit, yet finding one In the northeast that comes down enough in cost (through merit) is going to be next to impossible. Also…I don’t think that UDel, UVM or UNH have a greater sports scene/spirit than Buffalo.

You may qualify for significant merit aid at Alabama…where there is tremendous spirit and football. That may free up some cash for travel, but again, I don’t know the details of your finances. From what I can tell, with your ACT score you qualify for $20,000 a year (UA Scholar) and if you raise your score by a point you can get $26,000 a year (Presidential). Total cost of attendance for out of state students is $45,000, so it may (?) be affordable for you. You qualify now for the UA Scholar which brings the cost down to $25,000, and if you work summers you will have travel money.

Like I said, finding schools in the northeast that will give you enough merit aid to match SUNY will be impossible given your stats (it’s also hard with much higher stats). If they were higher you might have some luck with Pitt.

@twogirls Lehigh is actually one of my top schools! They have really good financial aid (capping loans). I can afford SUNY (I qualify for excelsior). At the end of the day, I will most likely end up Bing or Buff, but I’m just trying to find some other options as well.

I’ve heard people say Syracuse was generous with aid, but I don’t know what numbers they meant. If you qualify for Excelsior, I think it will be hard to beat!

Did you use the NPC for Lehigh to determine if it’s affordable?

Rutgers apparently has competitive merit scholarships up to $27,400 per year. Compare to the $28,420 billed cost for tuition, fees, room, board for NJ residents, or $31,103 tuition and fees only for non-NJ residents. However, some merit scholarships have a renewal GPA of 3.5.

I know these aren’t northeastern, but what about UCincinnati, UKentucky, UTennessee??
