the cutoff for MA is 223.

Can any student that made semifinalist and received the award letter from their principal/GC confirm what the cutoff is in WA state?

Just adding my info about NH.

PLEASE DON’T FREAK OUT! Check the explanation of the notation in the first post. When you see, for instance, AZ <= 219, that means that Arizona’s cutoff is no higher than 219. This comes from a report like, “I live in Arizona, made a 219, and got my letter.” When you see, for instance, TX > 216, that means that Texas’ cutoff is higher than 216. This comes from a report like, “I live in Texas, made a 216, and didn’t make it.”

(For the PSAT administered in Oct. 2010 with NMSF notifications in Aug./Sept. 2011 for the graduating class of 2012)

Because National Merit doesn’t post a list of cutoff scores by state, people on this site have traditionally posted data here. NMSC usually notifies in late August and news should be coming soon. Because highs schools are highly idiosyncratic about contacting their student semi-finalists, it would be great if everyone would update the score under their state to compile a list for the individuals who won’t know about their status for several more weeks.

You can feel free to edit the list yourself. Or simply post your information and rely on others to edit it in.

If you have been notified that you are NMSF, post your score (and your state) if it is lower than the score already posted for your state. It will then become the lowest know qualifying score and be indicated as “<=”.

If you have reliable knowledge of what the qualifying score for your state is (try asking whoever notifies you!), post it here, too. It will become the definitive cut-off score for your state indicated by “=”.

Finally, if you know that you did not qualify and had a reasonably high score, it can also be useful to post your score as an example of the highest non-qualifying score. This can be indicated by “>”

Please note: Be conscientious as you post scores on this thread–it would be crushing to be led to believe you have made the cutoff by a post but actually haven’t. But everyone should be tolerant of mistakes, too. This is an unofficial source of information derived from a collaborative process and is not, therefore, guaranteed.

@ACB - Yes, my S made SF and checked with his GC for the score… it is 220, per my post 491 and recorded on the list above :-)

218 in Texas, F M L.

Hey, Is anyone REALLY surprised that the cutoff for AZ rose from 209 to 213 (4 pts!!!)
I got a 209, and was expecting to get NMSF, but apparently not…

^ You are not the only one really surprised by the number of states with increases as well as size of the increases.

PMed samsting re: NY cutoff. No response yet. Is there anyone else that can shed light on the NY cutoff?

Sorry. No help here with NY cutoff as S still hasn’t been told anything. I agree with another NY post; looks like they are waiting to make announcement on Wednesday.

I totally agree, smilldeb, but we are not allowed to “discuss” in this thread.

There is a sense of social engineering to this, since studies point that ES impacts test scores, so the set the cut-offs by state to more fairly set comps within locales…
I think there should be one cutoff at a certain percentage level. This is for MERIT, one of the few ways to earn that. Technically, this with low SES have many options for FA, including those for merit.
I also find it amazing to see how many cutoffs went up this year, esp in states like CA and AZ… Basically, this is great for our country overall, if these things are taken more seriously and/or there is more talent.
But-The key is - nationally - did the scores go up overall? the states can reflect a distribution of scores that has changed.

Anyway, I just broke the rules. DING FAIL GONG

Son was notified of NM SF today; Michigan - 212

@DarcyLou - Congrats on son’s NMSF status! Is 212 son’s score or do you know if that is Michigan’s cutoff?

Yayyyyyy! I also have a 212 in Michigan but my counselor hasn’t notified us yet!

Sent from my Vortex using CC App

Well, D in Ohio did not get notified today of NM status with a 215. Another girl in 1 of her classes did, but D didn’t want to ask her what her score was. If the 214 reported here is correct, I have no clue why the principal would tell 1 student and not another. Now I am worried.

Thank you! We are very excited! We don’t know what the cutoff is; they didn’t tell him; so it would be less than or equal to 212! The letter from NMSC says “Except for your family and principal, this information is confidential until Wednesday, September 14, 2011…” Interesting.

Congratulations drumwriter22!!

Thank you! Congrats to you too! Your post made my day!

Yay!!! I’m at a 213 in Michigan and my counselor didn’t recieve anything yet, so you guys are life savers! :)

I wonder what’s going on with these GCs that say that they haven’t rec’d anything yet.

Are they pretending or is it possible the principal is holding the info until the 14th?

I’m wondering the same thing…
