National Merit Semifinalist?

Today, I was sent a letter by the New College of Florida congratulating me on being a National Merit Semifinalist and to apply for one of their scholarships. Did anyone else get anything from a college notifying them of being a National Merit Semifinalist? Are they lying to me? I don't understand why they would do that. I doubt I did well enough to be a national merit semifinalist though...I think it's probably an error made by the college. does anyone have any advice?

National Merit Semifinalists are notified through their schools in late August/early September of their senior year. So if you took the PSAT this October, it's too early for anyone, including the College Board, to know whether or not you're a semifinalist.

Some colleges send letters saying, basically, "The College Board sent us your PSAT scores and we think you might be a semifinalist next year ... so we're going to start recruiting you now!" This could be one of those - in which case, congrats - that bodes well for your PSAT score :)

bump. 10 char.

You should be getting your score anytime now.. your school should actually already have the scores but some decide to give them back before break and others to wait until after break.

If it was from a really well-established college, it would probably be believable but I'm not sure if you should get your hopes up yet. It's probably atleast a good sign though :)

assuming u r a junior there is pretty much no way they could if you were a semifinalist.

Is New College of Florida a well-established school? I believe it's academics are pretty good but I do not know that much about it.

Oh I thought you said some other college.. lol sorry.
I've heard of New College of Florida but I really don't know that much about it at all. Maybe look it up?

DD got the same thing.

You still haven't said if you are a Jr or Sr

who's DD if you don't me asking?

I'm a Junior which is why this is probably not a legit letter.

It's CC term for daughter. She threw the app away though. She is a senior.

Is it legitimate for Juniors? I doubt that I was a National Merit Semifinalist but I hope that this letter is not false.

That letter is the first of many you will receive. Many of the not-as-well-known universities start fishing early for good students. If you got a really good PSAT score they assume you will be NMSF...and act accordingly.

Well, that's great news.

Florida cut off this year was 212 (down from 215 the year before). Maybe New College knows something you don't know. I've seen posts from people that got their scores already so the lists might be available. However not even a perfect score last year merited early letters from any school (actually only TASP and that's a summer program and not a school).

anybody else have an opinion?

Based on my D's experience (she is a senior and SF), you would not know at this time. It takes some time for them to determine what states did what and determine the commended cutoff. Then comes the SF cut off. As for schools contacting you, as soon as scores are out for this year (and yours are high), you will start getting a lot of letters from smaller schools. I doubt the SF part of it though.
