I made it to the preliminary round of the national merit scholarship program and it said i can submit my scores, info, high school, address, and tentative major/ career to any 2 colleges. I'm not sure if i should submit my info to the schools i'd ideally go to (yale and stanford) because my score is only a 202 and i'm sure most other people attending those schools have a higher score. Should i submit it to them anyways or submit it to other ones like USC or berkeley?

My son reached the prelim status too (last year) and I believe his
score was 215. He sent the scores to his two top choices. He didn’t get into either top school. In hindsight, I think
it was a mistake to send them to Ivies because everyone does and you can just put the
accomplishment on your apps. I think it’s wise to send them to schools that are in your target instead of reach and search for the schools that give generous scholarships to those that have selected them as 1st choice to receive this letter. SOme schools give up to a full ride with this recognition others give 50% scholarships. Do a little research and you may use this to get a generous award.

Under the “financial aid” section, there is a separate section for NMSF/F. This question has been posed and addressed and I think you will find some useful information there. Good luck to you. Great job on your PSAT.

With a 202 you’re only going to be a commended. The only purpose of sending those scores will be to show that you are interested- the actal score doesn’t really matter. At some schools, showing interest just doesnt matter- surely true Yale and Stanford. Makes the biggest difference at less prestigous schools that are concerned with yeild and highly value interest. Even then, it sending this score won’t make much of a difference.
