Did anyone else compete in this?

I ended up placing third in my region because of a stupid, stupid, stupid, stupid mistake.

Is that like a spelling bee?

Yes, sort of.

LMFAO National vocabulary contest? I should've known...

Ah, well, congratulations for winning.

What level vocabulary? Like SAT words?

Quick, glance through the following words, and tell us how many you know!

Ouch mood.

Entrance, they're a bit above SAT level. It's not hard at the regional level, but it gets much more difficult at nationals.

I know one of the winners, lmao.

^^^ Wow, I knew like one. Defrenestate.

Wow@ those words...seriously memorizing vocab? Who does that?

ROFL dude you seriously know like every single competition winner personally...lmfao.

^^ Lolololol piccolo only associates himself with winners :P

I did this for my area and ended up with 4th. Made a terrible mistake - ended up passing a word I 80% knew only to get to one that I didn't know at all.

Anyway, I'll probably do it again in hopes of getting some quick cash for colleges.

We don't have it where I live. Kind of dissappointed me. I guess I could have done it online.

That's just the tip of the iceberg...hit me up on AIM.

I haven't heard of this but I did see the National Geography Bee. After watching parts of that and reading that list, I feel like a moron.

Join the club. I felt the same way.

:)

NGB is baller (crimea is in what country? patagonia spans what two countries?). At the risk of sounding like myself, I know the NYS 2004 winner and the national winner from '03 (and the 2004 FL winner...and several others). I bowed out with a 4th place finish but it was fun.

They wanted you to know the globe by heart as well as use some intuition to figure stuff out, like:

In 2003, what country in the indian ocean suffered massive flooding problems? (I'm not sure if it was flooding, but something like that)

If you answer correctly then you're a baller yourself.

I only knew 8 words on that site. :(

I thought the qualifying quiz online was pretty hard though.

My son was a finalist and I didn't know a single word that they gave them at the finals. These kids are all huge readers and many said they spent a lot of time on free rice and princeton review word a day. It's free so take the online test it is usually in November with a regional one in January I think. They are a great group that puts it together and last year there were 100,000 participants. The group that runs it is a very class act.
