National Youth Orchestra - 2014

I couldn't resist creating new thread once I saw the news - hoping to make it to NYO ..

Just announced: 2014 program for the National Youth Orchestra of the USA.

The orchestra, conducted by David Robertson, will play a premiere of a new work by Samuel Carl Adams; Leonard Bernstein’s Symphonic Dances from West Side Story; Benjamin Britten’s Violin Concerto with Gil Shaham; and Ravel’s arrangement of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition.

Bummer, my daughter misses the birthday cut off by 6 weeks.

This looks like a fantastic program. And kudos to them in commissioning a composer under the age of 30! And a worthy one, too.

I doubt many people know this, but NYO does not allow musicians, who make the age requirement, but who are studying music at a conservatory, to participate. It allows college students who are not studying music to audition however. I’m not sure why they came up with this rule, but it doesn’t seem fair.

The reason they exclude conservatory students and those majoring in music is they wanted this to be an opportunity for kids playing music who aren’t necessarily seriously heading into it (I say necessarily because they allow pre college program students like Juilliard’s into it). I kind of understand it, it is to give kids a shot who otherwise wouldn’t have it, and being that it is under the aegis of the Carnegie Hall outreach program, I can understand it. If they allowed conservatory and music school majors in it, it likely would be full of kids from the top programs only, and would not have represented much in diversity. The New York String Seminar program does things in a similar way, they don’t exclude music majors in college, but they try and have it be a lot more diverse. I think they want to give an opportunity to kids who otherwise wouldn’t necessarily get into a program like this one…the serious music students are already likely to have opportunities like this, many of them do upper level youth orchestras and of course the orchestra at school.

My best friend did NYO this past summer! Feel free to PM me if you have any questions that you want me to ask her for you about the experience or whatever else! She absolutely LOVED it–one of the best summers of her life :)

D-day is coming up . Decisions come out on Feb 7th

Anyone hear anything yet ?

Not yet!

Just received results via email.

Did ur kid get in ? no luck for me sigh

Yes. He was fortunate to be accepted. I’m sorry that you didn’t get in. Hopefully next year?

Congrats to you and your son. What an honor. Yeah, maybe next year. Thanks

NPR has a story on the orchestra, with a link to the premiere of Samuel Adams’ piece. <a href=“America's Youth Orchestra Hits The Road — This Time, Playing For U.S. : Deceptive Cadence : NPR”>America's Youth Orchestra Hits The Road — This Time, Playing For U.S. : Deceptive Cadence : NPR;

Fantastic performance yesterday evening in Chicago! My daughter is now fired up since she will be age eligible next year and is planning on auditioning. Congrats to all the young musicians that are doing such a fine job this summer.

Applications are open for auditions for next year’s youth orchestra: http://www.carnegiehall.org/Application_Requirements/</a></p>

Darn, I’m too old. I think they should have a National Old People’s Orchestra. :)

That’s actually a really fun idea!

Anyone submitting this year? Due in two days. Good luck!
