Forgive me if this is answered elsewhere, but how do you handle awards which you know you are getting but have not been officially announced/completed yet? Natl Merit Commended, AP Scholar etc., do you need official confirmation of these before putting them on an application? Filling out apps now, Nat'l Merit won't be in until Sept.

Since they are not official, you should not list them now. However, you can update the adcoms by email or post as soon as they become official in September. The adcoms are experienced enought to know what level of award you are at now with NMC, AP Schol., etc., and will not be hugely swayed by the official news.

They would not be impressed if you prematurely announce the award that has not yet been bestowed.

Combined NM Commended and SF are notified in April of jr year, so there should be no problem listing Comm. SF are notified in Sept, so unless you apply extremely early, you should know your status by the time you apply. I can’t remember exactly when the national (Comm) and state (SF) cut offs are announced, but anytime after that is fine as adcoms are familiar with these programs.

With AP scholar, if you have earned high enough scores in the correct number of tests by the summer after jr year, then you can write it down. However, you can’t count the AP tests you plan to take in sr year. Again, with these well know programs it’s OK to write them down before you get official notification, just be sure you’re correct ;).

Thanks for the reply entomom - makes sense.

Just FYI though, since DS had still not heard anything official since the April “name two colleges to be referred to” letter, looked on the NMSC site, which said the following:

In April following the fall test administration, high-scoring participants from every state are invited to name two colleges or universities to which they would like to be referred by NMSC. In September, these high scorers are notified through their schools that they have qualified as either a Commended Student or Semifinalist.

In late September, more than two-thirds or about 34,000 of the approximately 50,000 high scorers on the PSAT/NMSQT® receive Letters of Commendation in recognition of their outstanding academic promise.

As far as AP scholar, that info is concrete with actual test scores in, so guess it’s all good.

You are actually notified in spring of your junior year if you are commended - the only difference is that all the commended have a chance to become a semi finalist. So you could say that you were notified in the spring as a commended, and waiting for notification if you make semi finalist.

^ I hear you KG, going to have to talk again to GS at son’s school, he did not receive any notification on it yet except for the mailing sent out from NMSC about which two schools to notify. His number is 5+ higher than the cutoff for last year so I know he had to have made it in. Unfortunately, our high school likes to do things their way regardless.
