I am currently a sophomore at NAU studying Biomedical sciences. I like NAU to some extent. but compared to other schools, their pre-med (Biomed) field is not that known. I got into Univ of AZ which is well known for their program and they also have a medical school there. I am an Arizona resident. And I really would like to go to medical school here in Arizona and Univ of AZ has the only medical school in the state. And I am wondering if transferring would be the right step ?????

I’m from Arizona as well, and I get the sense that the U of A on the whole is better known than NAU. However, you definitely do NOT need to transfer if your only reason is to get into the U of A medical school. I don’t think it will make that much difference which school you are applying from. But that’s just me – try calling the admissions office of the medical school.

On the other hand, if you are only somewhat satisfied with NAU, go ahead. Tucson is a great, and they do have an incredible biomedical program there.

Thanks!! I am definitely looking to get a different experience and NAU has not been the place for a whole lot of things so i might just end up transferring.

Tucson makes people boring. Going to U of A isn’t likely to increase your chances of getting into their med school, as they have the same admissions standards for pretty much everyone in-state. But, if there are other things drawing you to U of A, go for it. Despite that risk of becoming boring. (Can you tell I’m an ASU fan?)

I agree with the others. Just because you attend a university that has a medical school does not automatically get you admitted to that medical school. I’m attending NAU and have friends that are in the Bio-Medical Program and they feel they are really getting great advisement and feel the coursework is really going to prepare them for medical school.

I recommend that you talk to your academic advisor an tell him/her your concerns about getting into med school. I hear admission to the medical school and professional schools after graduation is pretty good after graduation from NAU.

If there are some things at U of A that you think you can get that NAU doesn’t have I would just make sure they have it before you transfer. That way you won’t get down there and realize the program may be just as good but the student life or campus is not what you expected.

Anyone know about theater at NAU? My DD was accepted to both NAU and U of A. She is a Theater and Writing major (dual or major/minor). We know that U of A has a well regarded theater program, but we never really looked at the NAU theater program before.

Also, for those of you currently attending NAU…what is your honest opinion of the academics? How about the honors program? What is the social scene like?
