Last time I knew how to program a computer was in 1987, and that was in TurboPascal 3.0, the rocking language of the time!

Yea now they have TurboPascal 4.0!

I am actually not sure why they don't put restrictions on, but that wouldn't eliminate the problem.

And they wouldn't humiliate you...or at least they shouldn't from a professional standpoint. Ironically, we just had a very similar disucssion in an ethics class (LCDR was looking at porn, it was an XYZ case).

They would never put a restriction on when or when you could not access the web...it would create more bad problems than eliminating porn.

Thank gosh for C++!

Yea I'm sure that a lot of people would get annoyed. If they're doing research on STDs and they're being blocked because it has sexual terms, that's going to create some difficulties. Time restrictions would keep those late-nighters from actually doing their work.

Speaking of which, do they have restrictions on how late you actually can stay awake or do they just let you go (because you're the one that'll be screwed the next day)?

So they actually follow leadership ethics and don't punish you in public (singling you out, etc)? "Praise in public, criticize in private"

Plebe lights-out at Taps (10 or 11? Can't remember.).

Everyone else is on their own.

Yeah, especially Plebe Year.

ummm ok so how do they have time to get their work done?

Yeah, especially Plebe Year.

Yea that's what I thought lol.

3-4 hours per night.

Wow ok that's not bad. A BGO told the Sea Cadets that it was only 2 hours and that they had to make up their work on the weekends in order to get caught up. Is that part true (about the weekends)?

Regardless of your class, you will probably be working (catching up) on some weekends.

Weekday:
TAPS for 4/C 2300 -> unless late lights chit, 2400
TAPS for Upperclass 2400 (not enforced unless there is a strict OOW)

don't worry about getting in trouble for porn; the upperclassmen here at usmma recently had a meeting with the head of the IT department and he told the mids here that approximately 95% of all websites visited were "adult content"

Z - we're showing our age. Next you'll be telling us about Fortran and Wordstar! ;)

From previous posts I was under the impression you COULD bring a personal laptop, say for note taking during lectures, homework, etc. Right or wrong?

My mid said that most homework (especially for chem) has to be done via computer and submitted via the USNA network. Personal computers cannot be connected tot he USNA network. Personal storage space is very limited. I would suggest that incoming plebes hold off on bringing personal laptops until they get acclimated to the Academy. They can always bring their laptop back to the yard at Thanksgiving if they really think it will be useful. It will also help one to keep a low profile if they do not do or have anything vastly different from their classmates.
CM

Thanks candidatemom. So you CAN have them, just get into the AC year prior to. :)

Copy on the "low profile"! ;)

I'd CONFIRM that before doing it!

If you're wrong, you'll be SOOOOOOOOOOOORY!

My understanding is that you CAN have them, but there is no need to have them. Unless one is doing a term paper at one's sponsor's (and why on earth would one do that?) the issued computer is just fine. Again, I would suggest waiting to assess the need to bring more stuff than is necessary. Storage is really tight, (you did see the prototype room, right? Remember how small the locker is?) and you have to find a place to store everything after the academic year until the fall. The less extraneous stuff, the better.
CM

Sounds like GOOD advice! ;)

what about books....would you be able to bring them or would it be a waste? like study books or even your Bible though they issue one?

I brought a whole bunch of pro books (U.S. War Machine, etc. - delivered by parents during PPW) and never had any problems. I even had novels (Red Storm Rising was one).

I will admit that having to MOVE all of them later that week really stunk!

Unless something has changed (and in this case, I doubt it), books won't be a problem.

Do they actually issue Bibles? Are you sure? I know they give them out in the Chaplain Center (I still have mine), but ISSUED?

Either way, I have a near extreme doubt that anyone will catch any flak for a Bible. This isn't Berekely, remember.

I can only see any use for a laptop being during lectures. I doubt they're worried about theft or anything like that. We can only hope that the men and women at the service academies wouldn't steal. Regardless though, it's still complicated if you're the only one with a laptop (I can see how it may look, as with any college level class). However, I'd love to put my laptop to good use while I'm at the Academy rather than just letting it sit in my home-bedroom for 4-5 years before I'm even assigned a duty station.

Don't be too sure. There are lots of non-Mids walking through the Hall, as well as some Mids who shouldn't BE Mids.

Can you say with some level of confidence that the USNA staff and upperclassmen will eventually get those people out of the Academy or do they stay dishonest and somehow beat the system?

So, either way, a lock and an electric fence are good ideas?:)
