D22 has asked 3 HS teachers to write LOR: 2 core subject teachers and a music teacher. The colleges on her list vary widely in how many LOR they accept or require. She has linked her Naviance account with Common App and waived FERPA rights.
Logistical question: when she goes to request the LOR from these teachers in Naviance, does she need to indicate to each teacher which schools she wants their recommendation to go to? Or does she do a general request for the letters from all three teachers and then, later, manually assign teachers to each school based on the schools’ specific requirements? Basically, we’re not sure if she needs to decide ahead of time, before requesting each teacher through Naviance, which schools each teacher will be sending their letters to.
But note that for many colleges, they want teacher recs from core subjects, so the music teacher rec would be an additional rec, if the college accepts additional recs.
If the college requests or requires a core teacher, that means a teacher of English, science, math, history/social studies, or foreign language. Teachers of art, music, drama, gym, etc are not core teachers, regardless of school affiliation.
Right, but would his letter count as a third “teacher” recommendation or one of the “Other” recommendations? (I think common app distinguishes between the two? But we are new to this!)
It could go in with place in theory. It is the college themselves that may limit where it can be used. E.g. if the college requires 2 teachers, but list 0 optional teachers, then your kid is systemically prohibited from attaching as a teacher rec, but may attach as an other rec.
Don’t worry, it all becomes more clear once she is in the Common App.
