S's teacher tried to submit her LOR to Common App without success. It says that S's school uses Naviance and cannot submit it through Common App. I'm confused. I had no idea Naviance was used to submit applications somehow.

Anyway, this teacher is from this past year. S is returning to school after being homeschooled. We're a bit confused.

How do we set things up for the teacher to submit her LOR?

Talk to the college counselor at your son’s school. If the teacher writing the LOR is not affiliated with the school, the counselor will probably either grant a guest account in Naviance to the teacher, or will ask to have the letter e-mailed and will enter it him/herself.

My daughter’s school uses the same system. The college counselor assembles the entire application packet in Naviance, then submits it electronically to the colleges.

The way out Naviance works at our school is that you must fill out a request for teacher recommendations and also a parent’s signature to release the student’s records. The student also gets to check off whether or not they want access to the recommendation or chooses to have it sealed from their eyes. The school may also have a policy of not allowing the student to see recommendations no matter what they check off. It would seem this all is done to make it easier for guidance to keep track of all the work that is required of them. Bottom line at our school, as I understand it because it has never been an issue, is that guidance takes care of all the recommendations even at schools that don’t use the Common App.

Try going to Naviance and clicking on “request transcripts” and see what message comes up.

Spdf is correct. If the teacher is no longer affiliated with the school, the school will have to set up a temporary account for her and add her to the list of teachers. Once that is done, you can use naviance to ask her to submit a recommendation. With the common app, she will have to fill out and submit the common app teacher form and the letter of recommendation.

Your guidance office is usually where you can get teachers added to naviance. This is not an unusual occurrence so hopefully they will know exactly what to do.
