Naviance question

I was wondering if anyone knows a work-around for the Naviance glitch where, once you assign a recommender to “all colleges “, you permanently lose the ability to choose which recommendation goes where. The GC said we would have to contact the schools directly to send the correct recommendations but it seems like there should be a better option

I’m interested in this too. @Mwfan1921 or @MYOS1634 any advice?

I am not a Naviance expert, so want to make sure I understand the issue…is the issue that you have two LoRs, and for the schools that only require/accept one, you want to choose the one you are sending to those schools?

Can you cancel the LoRs in Naviance, school by school, then go back in and re-select the teachers, and instead of sending to all colleges, choose the specific option, selecting each school on your list you want each LoR to go to?

If you do this, make sure the teachers know what you did, since I am pretty sure they would be notified of the cancel request (but would see the re-request as well).

Any insights @pathnottaken? @sybbie719?

Hi
This is a see your counselor question as a/he will be able to do this for you in naviance

In the Common App training earlier in the year they seemed determined to lock in the same recommendations for all colleges, but the current language on the website seems to backtrack on that. They were embracing the word “common” in Common App and it seemed they had agreement with Naviance and similar vendors, but they must have received a lot of pushback. I had emailed them with concerns that in their effort to create equity they might be creating more inequity if only some with privileged ties could send additional personalized words of how a student may thrive at an institution.

There are directions on Common App for Naviance to assign certain recommendations. The counselor has to do this though. In Common App the student seems to be able to do it directly based on their directions. This was supposed to go away.

I thought I would post an update for anyone who comes to this thread in the future. It appears that, once the GC “submits” to Naviance on behalf of the school, the information is sent, much like a paper application, en bloc to the common app where it auto-populates. At this point recommenders cannot be chosen unless this option is pre-selected in Naviance. No-one can change this, not Naviance, the Common App, nor the GC. My best advice is not to select “all colleges” at the outset (too late for DS). Otherwise, Naviance suggested the GC append the correct recommendation as an “optional recommendation”. DS’s GC said she has been able to email the admissions office the correct recommendation and ask them to switch it out.

Thanks for the helpful info. How annoying for you.

My son only had 2 schools that required 2 letters, so I was annoyed with him that he selected both letters to go to all the schools.

When looking at the admissions portals, he could see that some of the schools only downloaded 1 letter. Fortunately, the one he most wanted was the one that had been submitted by his teacher when he submitted his common app, so it went in the original bundle. The 2nd teacher submitted a few days later. Still can’t get an answer from Case about whether or not they’ve gotten the 2nd letter, oh well.

There’s no school that he specifically doesn’t want to see both letters, but it’s a bit annoying on the Naviance end when you change your mind about something. He had a similar problem when he crossed a couple schools off his application list IN JUNE. They still show up on his list of “colleges I’m applying to” in Naviance and even his GC had to manually cancel the letters from going there too.
