We will be traveling to Colorado to cheer on the Navy Rugby Team as well as the Football Team. I have a question for the Air Force parents. The rugby match is scheduled for 1400 on Friday. Looking at the map of the Academy, there appears to be an area designated as athletic fields. We are assuming that rugby is played in that area. Do any Air Force parents know if rugby is played in that area? Also, will we be able to drive on to the Academy for a rugby match? If not, is there a shuttle that would drive us to the appropriate area? Any info that you can provide would be appreciated.

Not sure if the Rugby matches are on the football fields or where the other athletic fields are. Either way, there is access to them at the academy. The restricted areas (known as the cadet area) is in a separate section which is off limits. If you have time, go to the chapel -- you can look down onto the cadet area from there and take in some incredible views of the mountains. For that, go in the North entrance and follow it straight up to the parking lot that is in front of the chapel. The football field is closer to the south entrance, but that entrance is not always open. (I believe it is however, if there is a game scheduled). Good luck -- and, well, Go Air Force sink Navy!

I also don't know the answer to your question, but if you're going to take the hike over to the Chapel, (well worth it) you can also stop by the visitors center/gift shop. You drive past the aforementioned athletic fields on your way there.

The last couple of times I drove on to the AFA (dropping daughter off at Summer Seminar) I had my I.D. all ready for the gate guard, but the gate wasn't even manned. AFDAD is right though, they keep you out tof the cadet areas.

You can see the Football stadium from highway 25, it's between the North and South enterances, which are both wsell marked highway off ramps.

Go Navy beat Air Force (couldn't resist!)

I am hoping my son will be doing MANY push ups! GO AIR FORCE! SINK NAVY!

The Academy adopted a new base access policy starting October 1. Both the north & south gates are now open to visitors, but there will be a security check done at the gates, which will now be manned full-time.

You can find an article regarding the new policy at http://www.gazette.com/display.php?id=1321934&secid=1.

Well, it's not like they have to do many at school, that's for sure.

Tell me, has Air Farce gotten around to making their plebes wear uniforms, finally?

:D

GO NAVY!! BEAT CLOUD LICE!! ;)

Well the thorpedo will be staying behind to mind the yard- lots of duty, with only 5 of 12 plebes remaining behind....

about a 7 on the grouch-scale today, mostly due to lack of sleep. Apparently someone has been running around distributing shaving cream bombs in all the plebe rooms, and his was hit sometime after lights out last night- so he and his roomates had to clean it up....and since one of them is nursing a broken foot, it came down to 2 plebes on hands and knees for hours. He was able to get into his rack somewhere around 1:45am, only to be awake at 5:20am for whatever it is he had to do this morning. And a calc test to boot. Not a happy camper today. At least he thinks calc went well.

I hope navy throttles air force. And I can just imagine the rukus back at Bancroft if they don't, and if they do, and goodness only knows what Army-Navy week will bring!!! You can bet he will do his best to get to that game, lax or no lax!

I had one of those hung from my overhead one night during Army Week. The room looked as if it had snowed inside.

I got even the next day, though. Covered the upperclassmen's uniforms in talcum powder, INSIDE AND OUT. :D

I got caught and in trouble, but not fried, so it all worked out. ;)

^^^^LOL!!!!

Apparently all the plebe rooms in their company were hit on Monday night- and most stayed up till the wee hours to clean up for the inspection on tuesday-

they were SO P!$$ed..... however a certain band of youngsters failed to cover their tracks fully.... their rooms got "powdered" early Tuesday morning...and while all the plebes made it back to the safety of their rooms undetected, they left in their wake a handful of frantic youngsters who had but mere hours to re-prep for their Alpha Inspection..... the rest of the story has yet to be reported!

Poor Zoomies!!!

I wonder how Carney's words taste?

He told Coach Johnson when he was a senior in HS he was going to AF instead of Navy because he said Navy would never beat AF.

Turns our four years later, Carney and AF never beat Navy.

Beat Coast Guard!!!

Carney their QB or something?

Yeah. Zaph, pay attention.

Too much detail. All I need to know is the team names and the final score. ;)

You must have been one of those Mids for whom the games were like the infield at the Preakness. ;)

Having just returned from CO Springs, I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed my visit, especially the NAVY VICTORIES!!!! I attended Men's Rugby on Friday afternoon and witnessed Navy beat Air Force------TWICE! These were very intense matches with numerous injuries and very hard tackling. Both schools have very competitive teams, Navy is currently ranked #1. This was a very nice precursor to the football game on Saturday. There was a huge tailgate party sponsored by the Colorado Parents Association. Lots of fun. Needless to say that the game was terrific. I must admit that I was surprised about the differences in rules, etc at Air Force. Rugby players stayed in the dorms with their AF counterparts the first night. Rules seemed incredibly loose in comparison.....no evidence of company officer in the area among other things. I was also quite surprised to see AF cadets shirtless, in jeans, with "sink navy" painted on their chest. Haven't seen that kind of thing in Annapolis yet.

Son said essentially the same thing: AFA is like civilian college except that Cadets DO have to get up early. Otherwise, he also was surprisesd at the . . . differences [?]. I will hear more once he gets back.

Re: shirtless people in the stands. I watched the game w/ local AFA parents club and they speculated that the group in light blue t-shirts, including those that were shirtless, were from the AFA prep school, which is on the Academy grounds.

We had heard that the group in the t-shirts and the shirtless group were part of a "spirit" group, all were cadets. We saw a group in slightly different uniforms, no jackets, that we were told were prep school students. Not sure but could never imagine the Supe at USNA approving a group of students with no shirts, but I guess you never know.

I haven't been heavy into sports since the Mets won the Stanley Cup against the Steelers back in '72 with Karim Abdul Jabar as the caddie. ;)

I remember some STERN admonitions against the idea back in my day.

As I am fond of telling my sports fanatic friend:

I am as interested in sports professionals as they are in me.

The amount of time, effort, money, and whatever that washed-up ol' men [mostly men] direct towards sports teams is amazing to me. For what? So they can support some asinine player/owner in an effort that is supposed to indicate that UT [as in Univ. of Texas] is a better school than Ohio. [even though UT lost this year, or something similar] Ridiculous.

I am glad that Navy has a winning program [which is more fun than a losing program] but it is clearly secondary, for me at least, to everything else for which the Academies stand.

The only other football game that I can remember watching in its entirety is the Superbowl. [Even then its only an excuse to drink beer.]
