Navy ROTC

Thanks for the info on when the Scholarship is no longer valid. We have every intention of holding on to it as long as possible in the rare event something happens with usna....but we haven't gotten anything to know, so once again this forum provides answers.

thanks

Well, I just got home from a couple days at Harvard and with the Harvard/MIT/Tufts NROTC unit. Did PT at 5:45 this morning with all Marine Option midshipmen from the MIT unit and the BU/BC unit. Also went to their lab yesterday, and sat in on a couple NROTC classes.

I think a lot of my reservations about NROTC at Harvard were alleviated, since I found the experience very interesting and very cool.

Anyone else get any NROTC offers recently, or visit any ROTC units?

I'm definitely going to do NROTC next year at Notre Dame. I really want to be an officer in the Navy, but i really don't think the academy life is for me. i'm really looking forward to next year!

That's great. Have you visited the unit? What do you know about it?

i stayed with a kid in air force rotc at notre dame for a weekend. it seemed pretty laid back and a nice deal if you aren't up for the restrictive academy life. the little building they had there seemed pretty nice and new.

yea, i really liked it when i went up there. I'd much rather like a typical college experience, but i really admire the people who go to the academy. My best friend is going up there this fall, and he just can't stop talking about it. I visited a Lt. there and talked w/ him for a bit. The pt doesn't seem that strenous, but to my understanding, the navy guys usually get together and do some on their own too. I'm really excited about it, can't wait for that first week.

Shawna - My son did the 15:30 to 17:00+ seminar at BU yesterday with Mids from MIT (took the van over). Were you there?

Where was the morning PT and which days to the do it (MWF?)?

Yeah, I was at that lab on Wednesday! I saw another person who wasn't a Mid, but didn't talk to him. That must have been your son! Hmm tell him I was wearing a blue top and khakis, and see if he remembers me...

I did the PT on Thursday; they do it Monday, Wednesday, Thursday. I'd be interested to hear your son's take on what he saw of the unit.

Is there a deadline for when I will hear back from NROTC? When I check my status on the website it just says:

Selection Status
No decision has been made on your application.

I don't think the National Board Selections are completely done until the end of March....only the 'early board' ones....anyone else know differently???

Same situation here. I was told I would have recieved word by December, and here I am 3 months later with not even a letter or email. Some what disappointing from the program.

same here actually. I was wondering about that today.

I was told that it could be as late as the end of april!! All this waiting really sucks!

DD got her scholarship January 27th to VMI.
Wondering if hers is done because she did everything by Oct.
Also wondering if your first choices were "popular".
Such as Notre Dame..Harvard..etc.
I know that when we we into the planning phase of the NROTC Her first choice was popular (IIT) but she changed it, lack of her interest in extra curriculars.(Not to mention tooo close to home)
At VMI her dad and I would pay her room and board-not to mention plane fare..gas. As to her pay..we decided that would be hers.
I surely hope you all get what you want..everyone should enjoy their college years!

Is the NROTC scholarship based on where you live or where you want to go to school? Jake got his, I believe in Oct... or earlier. He got appointment to USNA but had no LOA. So it was surprising that he got the NROTC so early.Scores weren't as high as some I've seen on CC. However, he did call up the officer who interviewed him several times for him to check on things.

A Marine Recruiter told me that every one of there districts, or offices has so many scolarships available. So I believe where you live has alot to do with whether or not you get one. Another factor is the school. Based on the need of the Navy, each school or NROTC program is able to have "X" amount of schoalrships. This amount varies year by year. So it seems like the Board has a lot of hoops to jump through....

zero-

DH just got financial aid letter from IIT. Yikes (w/o rotc)!!!
NROTC added that she could still join them..openings?
It seems to add to the theory of where you live is who gets the scholarship.
Plus DD gave impressive interview with NROTC officer.
