I have not posted on this board in a while, but a while back I posted asking a little bit about the re-application process. To give you a little background, I applied for the USNA class of '09, received a nomination, but was not offered an appointment. I also applied for the NROTC scholarship and was not offered it either.
I went ahead and "implemented" my backup plan and am now attending the University of Missouri-Columbia. I am currently a part of the NROTC unit here, as a college-program student (non-scholarship). I actually re-submitted my NROTC scholarship application via a recruit before I left for college, and about a week ago I was called and told that I was awarded the 4-year scholarship. However, due to the fact that I am currently in the NROTC unit, my scholarship is void (meaning I can't receive it). So, I am back to square one with the NROTC scholarship. My USNA application is complete (except for the transcripts, which I won't have until the end of the semester) as well as all of my nomination packets and processes (have my last interview tomorrow). I was informed by one of my advisors in the NROTC unit that if I received a scholarship next semester (they submit our packets for 3.5 and 3 year scholarship after we are part of the unit) that, if accepted, it would VOID my USNA appointment process. Meaning, if I accepted a 3.5 year scholarship in January, my USNA opportunity would be unavailable, because I had already accepted a NROTC scholarship. If i accepted the 3-year, it wouldn't because it wouldn't start until after I decided whether or not I was accepting an appointment from USNA (assuming I was awarded one in the first place). However, in that case, I would lose an opportunity of having a semester paid for.

I know all of this might sound confusing, and I apologize if it isn't clear, but my situation is rather unique and I did my best. If you need further clarification, just let me know. I appreciate all of the great advice and support all of you provide to everyone on this message board and thanks in advance for any help you might be able to offer.

I'm in somewhat of the same position as you. I applied for 09 and was QQQ'd and had a nomination, but did not receive an appointment. I am currently a sophomore at NC State University majoring in nuclear engineering and physics. My app for USNA c/o 2011 is complete (except for a college transcript-same as you). The only difference is that I am not currently in NROTC but if I do not gain entry to USNA this time around, I plan to be in the NCSU battalion next year. From what I have heard, NROTC will not be detrimental to your application (far from it actually). But Im not sure about receiving a scholarship.

I am about to start the application on the official NROTC website but I am not sure if I can apply for a scholarship at this time since I am not in NROTC as of yet. If I find out anything else about scholarships that would apply to you, Ill let you know.

I know this doesnt really answer your question, but if you ever run into a problem unique to your situation, just shoot me a message sometime; Im sure Ill be going through the same thing or something close to it.

Personally, I would not accept the 3.5 year scholarship if it would possibly jeopardize USNA in any way. I would say that it would be safe to assume that you would receive the 3 year scholarship for next year if USNA doesnt work out.

Thanks a lot for the response. With regards to you applying for the NROTC scholarship, I can answer that question, sorta. If you look on the website for the NROTC scholarship, it states this:
"Students w/30 or more semester hours or 45 or more quarter hours of college credit upon application or students already enrolled in NROTC College Program are not eligible for four-year NROTC Scholarships; these students should see professors of naval science at host university's NROTC unit to discuss other scholarship opportunities."
That is the rule that got me as well (I was not told on the front end that this would happen). I would say to ensure that you ask the recruiter, but that is the exact rule copied and pasted. If you do fit under that requirement, GET YOUR APPLICATION IN AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE!

With regards to the 3.5 year scholarship, I agree with you about not accepting it, but what if I do not get offered an appointment?

I know what you are saying, though. I just can't understand why being on scholarship would penalize me and keep me from applying to the Academy.

For future reference, I found out the answer to my original question. Accepting a NROTC scholarship in no way affects your chances of getting an appointment to the Academy. Just thought I would share my answer in case anyone else ran into the same situation. Thanks a lot for all of the help and good luck to everyone!

It looks like I am going to be in the same boat as well. Kahuna, are you sure the NROTC scholarship won't void the USNA application process? Right now I'm applying for both as well. Where did you find your answer?

My dd accepted her NROTC scholarship to Embry-Rddle. It had no bearing on her continuing pursuit of an appointment--one that she eventually received. btw--she had more than 30 (45 total) credits, but they were dual-enrolled. She had not graduated yet. She received a 4 year scholarship.

My son was told by his Navy recruiter that he should accept the NROTC scholarship even though he is a Naval Academy candidate. The NROTC scholarship can always be declined at a later date; it will then be offered to another student with impeccable credentials. You do not want to decline an NROTC scholarship and then find out that you don't have an appointment to the academy. If that happens you will be SOL.
