I recently visited Duke University. During the information session, I read that there was a 39% acceptance rate for NC applicants. Is it easier for NC students to get in?

statistically yes, assuming you are qualified.

it is probably easier to get in if you are underqualified too...

it's a pure numbers game. since they take more students from NC you are more likely to get in - but duke still only accepts the best of the best of the best, sir! (MIB reference...) it's important to keep that in mind. just because you are from NC do not think that you are a shoe in or that duke can be a safety school but ANY means.

^
The numbers say otherwise. The only stats for NC/SC applicants I have are from '08 (these #'s may have changed a bit).

I have heard that Duke has to accept a certain number of NC and SC students because of some endowment. idk if that is true or not.

Yea, I worked in the admissions office this past year, and that is true. When James Duke endowed the school, he specified that a certain percentage (I believe its somewhere around 18-20%) of students be from either North or South Carolina. He wanted to ensure an educational opportunity for what was then a rather not very highly educated region. So, because there is such a high number of students required to be from either north or south carolina, you do have a better chance of getting in if you're from one of those states.

Bear in mind that we don't actually reach that percentage. I believe the percentage specified is around 15%, and that we reach around 12%...
