NC State 2023 Admission thread

@clemsonfan101 - from NC State’s College of Engineering website - here is the profile of the students they admitted in 2018:
“Students who have taken and performed well in advanced courses, particularly in math, chemistry, and physics, are best prepared for the academic rigor of the College and are more competitive in the admissions process. Also considered are standardized test scores (SAT or ACT), and lastly, extracurricular activities and leadership experiences. The typical fall 2018 first-year student admitted to the College has an unweighted grade point average ranging from 3.75 – 4.0. Eighty percent of all new engineering freshmen are in the top 10 percent of their high school graduating class. The middle 50 percent of incoming 2018 freshmen have SAT scores in the 1340-1450 range and 30-33 on the ACT.”

@Essel I thought that was the case but was hoping I was wrong! [-O<

@Cheeringsection - I understand :slight_smile: Good Luck!

Congrats to all who are in and good luck to those deferred!

I was deferred in state.

Does anyone know the percentage of deferred students who get admitted in March?

Top 100 of 657 students.
His brother went there.
Do not understand except my county is huge. This fact comes up quite a bit when discussing NC State and UNC.

Is there anyone that hasn’t got their decision yet? There is no decision letter on my portal… the admission office contacted me weeks ago for some documents… would that delay my decision?

@Shan704 engineering? if so did u take physics or calculus b/c?

Deferred in state for Engineering…only taking AP Cal and AP Physics this year. Sending in mid year and hoping for the best!!

Welp, I was thinking it might be tough for my S to get admitted, that he might be right on the border, but now after reading this thread, I’m thinking there’s no chance at all. 3.02 GPA, 1250 SAT, 2 APs (environmental science and computer programming I think it was) last year, and honors Calc/Stat and honors physics this year. The areas I was hoping would work in his favor are how well rounded he is-- 1) lifeguard for 3 years, now a head lifeguard, 2) a lot of involvement in civic organizations, 3) musician involved in ensemble outside of school, and 4) how responsible he’s had to be with helping take care of his 3 younger siblings in the afternoons while I teach 45 min away from schools, and father alternateing between day and night shifts his whole life. Plus he is a gifted writer and his essay for common app brought me to tears. So authentic and gave a true vibe of his personality. I was also hoping legacy could help, but I have lost faith at this point. One uncle, 1 aunt, 1 grandfather all undergrads of NC State, and 1 uncle with master’s degree from NC State. I also feel guilty that it’s his top choice but our circumstances have cut into his study time, etc. He didn’t apply EA, but I came on hear looking for info. Need to go ahead and process how amazing the applicant pool sounds and be happy for everyone else. He was admitted to ECU already, and is still waiting to hear back from UNC Charlotte. I know everyone will land where they’re supposed to be… but still… If you have a nugget of hope, throw it out there

@btween46 Into which program did he apply?

1st choice: engineering undecided
2nd choice: exploratory studies

@btween46 If you are from rural NC or at least not in Wake County you have much better chances.

When accepted does NCSU send out a package in the mail also? If so, has anyone got this yet?

Does anyone know if/how private vs public affects admission chances? What are the factors that would make a difference?

NC State and UNC are most interested in having representation from as many counties as possible; it’s shorthand to keep the state legislature happy. Private schools are going to have much, much better counselor letters and teacher letters (IN GENERAL). But I don’t think state schools care public vs private

Acceptance to private elite colleges is much greater from privates than publics due to 1) income of parents correlated with test scores/test prep. About 20% of elite school kids (duke, vanderbilt, harvard etc.) come from top 1% income ($630,000 a year and up). 2) separate counselors for school functions vs applying to colleges at elite privates, better care/time resources per reference letters at privates… But for UNC and NC state any benefits (private/public) are likely the indirect effects for kids on the bubble with better written reference letters.

My daughter was deferred but after todays epic embarrassing basketball game she should call NC State back and
say she actually defers them… and say i really can’t be seen with you…

@98st8Wolf with that attitude she definitely belongs in Chapel Hill. No sure I know a single kid that picks a college that will provide them a lifetime of income and happiness based on ONE BASKETBALL game…

Yes, that’s why we send our kids to schools- because a dozen guys can play ball 8-|

Hmm do you think @98st8Wolf was trying to interject some humor???
