wow… there is zero sense of humor in this crowd. It’s called a joke. I thought the stuffy crowd WAS in Chapel Hill. I guess we have some too
My daughter was deferred. She has great class rank and GPA but not so great with standardized test scores. Any idea on acceptance after being deferred? We are in rural NC
Here is what’s posted on their site:
Our best advice is to apply early. We don’t necessarily give priority to early action applicants in the review process but you do receive priority consideration for scholarships as well as our honors and scholars programs. You will also hear back from us sooner! Decisions are released on the corresponding notification date as long as your application is complete by the deadline.
Looks like when the defer, they need more info to make a decision. They have asked for my mid year transcript as I applied for Engineering and only taking AP Cal and AP Physics now. Luckily I am doing very well!!
@southbend Good luck on your getting in…my son is going for engineering as well…hopefully they will be classmates…unless he decides to go to Clemson
@98st8Wolf the irony is when I was trying to decide what school to attend (1990), the strength of the mens basketball team was on the plus side for making me leave MD to go to UNC. 1 game wouldnt have swayed me, but the last 3 NCSU games might have given me pause
Hi there! My in-state son was deferred. I have a couple questions I really hope some of you can help answer!
1: Do mid-year grades get submitted through the common app? This was not made clear, although I found it in the instructions for the 2018 deferred page. Today, I called the NCSU office to talk to someone. The person who picked up the phone did not sound very “sharp.” He said, “no… the common app isn’t good. The counselor needs to send’'em straight to us…” But he couldn’t explain how. Arghhh… this process just gets better and better.
2: Did anyone get accepted EA for their 2nd choice major? I am VERY VERY curious about this fact. My son’s first choice, CS, was a reach and we knew it. So we thought they’d consider him for his second choice? Now I’ve heard they may save the second choice til the March reviews. Anyone know?
Sorry for the long post!
They only consider the second major for regular decision not EA. Hope that helps
On number 1 - if your school used naviance which links in the common app - your son needs to see his counselor, possibly pay a fee, and they will submit through naviance which is linked to NC states admissions tool. Or your school might mail it. But common app.org does not send transcripts. The app has a section for self reported grades which N.C. state does not accept.
@NChovermom I’m not sure how your son’s school does this, but my school has an online transcript request. I was confused, too, because at the beginning of the year, it just asked which college to send the transcript to. Yesterday, I went online to request the transcript again and it had many more options including first marking period grades, mid-year grades (and it specifically said “this option is mainly for deferred students”), and end of year grades. So,I would say that you probably should request the mid-year grades the same way that you submitted your transcript. Hope this helps a little. It is a confusing process.
That helps SOOO MUCH! But seriously I wish we had made different choices on our EA. Now we wait, a bit more hopeful. Thanks!
Did you watch NC State admissions Facebook live last night? Pretty informative.
I have downloaded admitted student checklist. There is not anything on there about when you register for classes.
Is that done during the summer? How soon can you do that to get the classes you need?
@markfnc I believe class registration occurs at orientation - which is in june and july
Spoke with admissions today. They have had an increase of 15% in applicants this year versus last year which was already up from years prior.
We’re in the same boat. In-state deferred to engineering (which was a reach to begin with). Check with your school- our school policy is to send mid-year transcripts to all schools the student has applied to unless the student specifically opts out. Waiting for regular decision notification. If he gets in engineering, he’ll most likely do that. If he gets in second choice, it will be a difficult decision. Start at State and try to CODA into engineering, start someplace else and try to transfer in to engineering or just give up on State and attend one of the other schools where he’s been accepted into engineering- all difficult choices with unknown outcomes.
Perspective student engineering open house is March 30, would that be for admitted students also?
My OOS son was deferred from EU with a 1480 SAT. He has already been accepted at USoCarolina and Clemson. We were very surprised since our daughter was accepted two years ago ED with a 30 ACT. A 1480 SAT is equivalent to a 33. He also has better strength of schedule (9 APs) and better extracurriculars. It wasn’t his top choice, but wondering what deferral means for RD. Thoughts?
Meant ED!

is this for admitted also?
