NC State Early Action for Fall 2022 Admission

I would definitely agree at this point.

As the parent of an accepted student from MA, I can say that the low percentage of OOS kids is actually a negative for her - sheā€™s concerned that sheā€™ll feel bit like the odd man out, especially on long weekends and such if lots of kids go home. So I think the lack of merit aid is only one thing that keeps the OOS yield low. Even at full price, itā€™s pretty comparable to a lot of the private schools here in New England, and I think its a really good fit for her other than being in the minority.

Only thing I find a bit annoying right now are the nc state scholarships (not financial aid). Most of them on ā€œpackassistā€, youā€™d have to wait until fall 2022 to know if you get them or not. Essential saying if you even want a shot at them, youā€™d have to commit to NC State. It would be much more pleasant to just know the results before commitment dateā€¦

I understand. Weā€™ve had the same conversation.
One reason my daughter wants to go out of state is to meet new people from different parts of the country, world. Definitely something to consider.

Exactly, my daughter is looking to get out of her comfort zone - but also looking for others with the same mindset. That absolutely could happen at NC - hoping to get a better sense of that when we visit. Any thoughts/opinions from more experienced parents are very welcome!

@rd123456 the NCSU website says that decisions will be announced on 2/18/2022. Not too much longer, but then we have to start the wait for the scholarship announcements.

What scholarship announcements? I thought the general app was due on the 15th.

The general scholarship app is due on 2/15. I mean waiting to hear the results from that application.

Oh yeah thatā€™ll take a bit. Itā€™s due on the 15th so I donā€™t even know if they started reading apps. Maybe we will hear back in March or April

This is really meant to be this way. Kids in boarding schools are counted as ā€œfromā€ their home county, not the county the school is in. Same with chartersā€“which makes it weird for the schools sometimes.

Of course I wouldnā€™t know every county in NC is allowing access (which I personally believe they should allow), but I do know for certain https://ncvps.org/ is available in every county in NC. My kids do some classes through their program.

Itā€™s a bit of a leap of faith to be an out-of-stater at an in-state public. My younger daughter is an OOS freshman at VT. It was between NC State (in-state) and VT. She really felt strongly about getting out of NC and not feeling like she was in ā€œ13th gradeā€ at high school. It was going out of her comfort zone for sure, but she went in with the mindset that was just going to completely immerse herself in the college experience and meet as many people as she could. VT has an overall friendly vibe to begin with and her friends are from a few different states, including VA.

Older daughter went to UNC with a bunch of kids from our city, so she had a lot of friendly faces going in. Two of her closest college friends are from NY & CA. Despite already having some of her best high school friends with her at UNC, there was no hesitation in including the OOS girls. After the first couple weeks, no one really cares where anyone is from - they all become a college family.

I wouldnā€™t stress too much over the long weekends - despite being 3 hours or less from home, both daughters always seemed to have plans for the long weekends and Iā€™m betting your daughter will as well. If your daughter feels pulled toward NC State (and itā€™s affordable for you), I would encourage her to take the leap.

and thanks for mentioning boarding schools and charter schools. I know some boarding schools are now offering online classes so a child could live anywhere in NC. As far as charter schools, my kids go to a charter school so they could live anywere in NC as well, though there would be a distance issue. However, I am sure if a charter school was located on a border part of Wake, kids would travel from another county.

Thank you so much, this just the kind of personal experience we are hoping to hear about

My kidsā€™ charter is over the Durham county line in RTP. So a real mix of Wake & Durham counties with a good number of others too. I think (but could be wrong) that one reader at NC State reads all the applications from a school. So that may or may not have an impact for these schools.

The biggest flaw with NCVPS is not the classes, Iā€™ve heard that they are great, itā€™s that the studentsā€™ public school has to give a student accessā€“a parent canā€™t pay for a class on their own if the child is enrolled in a public or charter school. Homeschool or private school parents can. So the school is a gatekeeper and they may have other priorities for assigning students to online courses. Annoying that we couldnā€™t just pay for NCVPS, but the state legislature set it up that way intentionally.
