I’m currently enrolled in a community college with a 4.0 GPA. I am trying to transfer into the computer science program at NC state. When submitting my application, I will have 32 credit hours with all of the minimum class requirements completed. When finishing this final semester at this community college I will have 49 credit hours with likely a 4.0 GPA. I have a few concerns. First: in the last 6 months I have completed 32 credit hours of course work and I can see how that may give the impression of someone who is relatively flaky or short sighted when compared with someone who has gone at a moderate pace over the course of say, 24 months. Second: my class schedule has given me very little time for extra-curriculars. I intend to be more involved with volunteer work and other activities for this upcoming semester. I have already taken a job at the math tutoring center at the community college, and am working to polish up some of the coding projects that I’ve completed in the past. I’ve also been researching any community service that I can be involved with in my area. I only have a month and a half before my application is due. I fear that there will be little to show that I am intent on pursuing computer science. Will my GPA help bolster my application? Is there anything else in the short term that I can do to help my chances? What are the odds that I won’t get into the computer science program at NC state? 10%? 20%? 50%? 80%? 100%?
