NCSSM 2017

I am currently a freshman in CD 11 (they should have made it 12... The Hunger Games were practically filmed in my backyard)! I live in a small rural town so my high school does not offer as many classes as many other schools. I hope I do not come off as pretentious but NCSSM has been my dream school since 6th grade.

I started school early (not sure if that matters at all). My middle school allowed a small number of students to take algebra I in 8th grade, I wish I could have taken algebra II in middle school.

Freshman year:
Honors Biology (100) normally a sophomore class at my school
Honors World History (99) required 9th grade class at my school, history is not my best subject
Honors Algebra II (100) I was the only freshman in this class, mostly sophomores and juniors
Choir (99)

I am currently taking:
Honors "Math 2" (which let me tell you, this is not a math class!!) I am currently making 104 I think, I passed the math 3 final with a 95 but our "lovely" state requires math 2 now.
Honors English 1 (I currently have a 99)
Honors Marine Biology (100) My favorite class. This is actually a fairly challenging class. My teacher believes that it should be an ap class.
Honors Chemistry. I mean "health and pe" Yes, my school took me out of honors chem for NO reason. Anyways this class is NOT gym. It is sit on the floor and do nothing.

If you can't already tell I am quite sarcastic.
I have a 4.0 unweighted gpa and a 4.75 weighted gpa. My class rank is 1 out of 160.

Sophomore year I am planning on taking:
Honors Chemistry
Pre-Calculus
Honors English II
Honors Civics & Economics (required for sophomores)
AP environmental
AP statistics

Frech 1 & 2 are my electives but if they do not fit into my schedule I plan on taking Honors Anatomy & Physiology and hopefully French 1 will work out because I need a language...

My middle school had three clubs: FBLA (I was the president), Math Counts (I placed 11th out of 340+) and Huddle Club? (aka Prayer Club) I am not religious.
At my high school I am a member of Chess Club and Philosophy Club.

Volunteer:
During my lunch period I tutor Math 1 students and on tuesdays I tutor middle schoolers after school. This is currently my only volunteer work but I plan on volunteering at the local humane society.

Sports:
My definition: Something that I am very bad at.
7th grade: cheerleading
8th grade: track
9th: cross country

I was excepted into the Duke TIP program in 7th grade. I have taken Architecture, Psychology and will be taking Marine Biology this summer through Duke TIP. I do not remember my exact scores but I do know that I scored as high as average high school students in NC in 7th grade. I took the PSAT this year (9th) and scored 62/80 on all three sections.

Awards:
2nd place in middle school art competition
1st in business math (district)
3rd in business math (state)
11th in Math Counts competition
honor roll
A bunch of random awards from school. (highest average in 8th grade etc)

I hope this will help future NCSSM applicants especially ones from small rural towns. I would greatly appreciate some advice! Thank you!
Ms. Yancey County, NC

Hey! We find out if we get in on Thursday, so excited (Potential Class of 2016 student)! I think you have an amazing chance of getting in, and I actually bet you will! I did lots of things similar to you (and I live in one of the competitive wake county districts), so if I get in I’ll be willing to bet you will too!
