Questions:
When and how do you find out the results of the Welcome Day placement tests?
Also, where is the intake form for Latin (since placement is based on that rather than a placement test)?

@Taben

They told us we’d get the results in May, but didn’t give us a specific date. I’m assuming once they’re posted there will be an alert when you log into focus. Since you went to Welcome Day II, you might get the results a few days later than those who went to Welcome Day I.

The Latin Intake form should be under the Orientation tab on the students account and is called the Latin Language Intake Form.

I could have sworn they told us we would find out May 10th.

You are right Emma1202. Placement results do come out on May 10th.

I just looked back at the notes that I took on Welcome Day and I wrote down May 11th.

Thanks! Do you happen to remember when we’re supposed to hear about roommate assignments? I can’t remember if it’s June 20 or July 20.

I don’t have that written down, but I think it will be July 20.

Placement results are out. Question:
They do not list a placement for World Language and she did the Latin Intake form. So, how does that work?!?! Is there no feedback for the languages that use an intake form rather than placement test?

T

@taben: I think that she will put what she wants on the course requests module in Focus when it opens up.

What did you guys place into ?

@StanfordOneDay: AP Calculus BC with Advanced Topics, AP Chemistry, Physics with Advanced Topics, AS305 AmStud, and Intro to whatever language I want (probably Latin or Spanish)

Question: Can you sit for the AP English exam after completing AS305 (with a certain grade) or do you have to also register for a special studies option?
We are a bit confused about taking AP exams for non AP classes…as there are not a lot of AP offerings, especially in the humanities (such as AP English, AP Latin, etc.).

T

@taben: I think you should email one of the administrators or the dean of humanities.

Wait list student here… how are waitlist students notified of their selection as a finalist ? Are most waitlist students notified on June 7th, with the balance of spots being filled as those notified on June 7th decline, or others committed to attend change their mind ?

@seaver Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think that if we get in they will call us; either your home phone, or your parent’s phones if you are not home.

Do many calls go out on June 7th or is there generally some delay ?

Our daughter just got in off of the waitlist. She was called. Believe me, they will call whatever numbers they have and will leave a message(s) if they do not get you. They left a message on our home and cell phones. My daughter never listed, on the application or any other point (welcome day maybe?) her own cell number…just my husband’s so they left it on that cell.

The call basically was a kind message of congratulations offering her a spot in the class of 2014 and directing her to check her email to accept or decline.

24 hours AFTER the call (keep this in mind as she was worried that there was no email immediately)she received the email notice of the offer and simply needed to reply “I Accept” by the date listed (which was about 72 hours after the call).

Also, her status on FOCUS changed under Demographics. Earlier it listed Waitlist under Class. Now is says Junior.

We took the following approach: She totally proceeded as one being very hopeful and prayerful of getting into NCSSM and doing the required work on FOCUS with classes, etc. but also planning on returning to her home school, just in case (course eregistration, planning on summer sports and band workouts and practices, etc.). It is, I know, a bit of a stressful doublelife but that is the reality of waitlist situations.

Finally, we too were told that the call could come anytime from June 7 through Labor Day. We were also told that the odds of getting in off the waitlist are quite good…no guarentee, but good. It often is more a matter of when you will get in, not if. As a student told my daughter on Welcome Day II…“As a waitlist finalist, you are IN, they just don’t yet have a BED for you.”

Hang in there. Spots will continute to open up! Our prayer was, frankly, for those who were not committed to going to tell Admissions sooner rather than later so that she and other waitlist kids who really wanted to attend would get in sooner rather than later and, of course, that if it is meant to be that she get in. Hold good thoughts and keep busy rather than sitting around worrying about…that was the main advice we gave our daughter. I know…easier said than done. I will hold good thoughts for you all!

Congratulations!! That’s so awesome that she got in! Keeping my fingers crossed that I get my call sooner rather than later; Summer Ventures is coming up, and if I get the call before I go, I can’t go to Summer Ventures anymore. The anticipation is killing me, I’ve heard so many stories about people getting in while they are already in school and having to pack up all of their things and leave.

We were told by SVSM that if you were waitlisted by NCSSM you could accept SVSM and would NOT be expected to release the spot if you later got in off the waitlist. The reasoning is that they do not expect people to change their summer plans at the 11th hour. In addition, if the call were to come the day someone arrived at SVSM or while in attendance, they would not expect the student to turn around and leave SVSM. Therefore, only those who were Finalist from the start and accepted that slot were expected to decline SVSM. So, you might want to check with your site coordinator to see.

The other issue though, of course, is whether one has the time to do both if they have some things planned before or after SVSM and want to try and squeeze in the 60 hours of summer service…and time to shop, pack and spend time with family and friends. A lot to consider!

Good luck to you with the waitlist. Mini. Keep good thoughts!

Thank you for the advice, I will make sure to talk to my site coordinator about this! I think the volunteer service is what I am most concerned about; I am also gone most of June, so an ideal time to finish my 60 service hours would be in July, the time slot I have saved for Summer Ventures. So I guess we will see what happens. Thank you!!
