I have had several folks contact me about the waitlist to finalist experience. Rather than pm everyone, I thought it best to post here. Earlier on this thread I explained that we received a phone call. That is correct. We did not answer at home or on the cell (we were out of town) and messages were left at both locations. A day later our daughter received an email with the offer to be part of the class of 2014.
Since then, we have had little contact with NCSSM but I do know that there are medical forms to be completed and a deposit fee to be paid, things that finalist had to take care of awhile back but not required of waitlist students. Also, there is a summer online physical science class she needs to take that she did not have access to until after she became a finalist. She said that does not seem overly time consuming.
We are from Congressional District 9…Charlotte-Mecklenburg area. I have no idea if/how that impacts movement on the waitlist.
Any change of heart? No, our daughter decided that she wanted to go for sure after Welcome Day 2 and has not waivered on that choice.
Another student made her aware of a facebook page for NCSSM students. She is not very ‘into’ facebook (it just meant a bunch of drama and gossip at her old school!) and I do not think has been active on there just yet, but will be watching it for hints on packing, roommates, classes, etc. She did go on a related site on facebook to request a senior sibling.
Any other questions? Feel free to ask. The whole process is rather nerve wrecking and the waitlist process very much so. Whatever we learn, we will share! Remember, as I posted before, there is a good chance you will get in if you are waitlisted. That is what we were told all along…it is more of an issue of when then if.
For those who were original finalist, any word on what the deposit is for? Also, do any of you know anything about a summer program they have for underrepresented minorities accepted to ncssm? Is the class of 2014 facebook page helpful to you?

@taben: I believe I also got an email about a leadership conference for Hispanic, African american, and Native american females. I am part Hispanic, but will not be able to attend unless I get off of the waitlist. Do you know if it is at NCSSM? The email wasn’t that specific.

I think you can take the physical science course regardless of whether you are on the waitlist or not; I’ve already finished it. Also, in case any other wait listed students were wondering, you can still do your service hours this summer and NCSSM will count them towards your requirement, should you become a finalist. I’ve finished my hours at a non-profit organization, and thought of asking just in case it would be allowed.

@taben: The deposit was in case if any costs incur while your daughter attends (lost books, broken furniture, etc.), color printing in the library, and the PSAT (which is mandatory at NCSSM). When your daughter loses or breaks something, I believe that it is taken from the deposit and the remainder is given when she graduates. My parents made me pay the whole deposit because they say it’ll make me think about my actions and the consequences that come with it (but I don’t lose or break anything often, so I think I will be getting the entire $250 back).

Since I am a minority, I will be attending one, except which will be for males. I know for the males, that we are going to NC State to do some type of research and just getting to know each other or whatever. I think that this is the 2nd year doing the girls minority program, so maybe things aren’t quite set yet on what exactly they will do with that (but males minority is only entering its 5th year). I hear that it is a really great opportunity to meet other people from across the state who will be living with you for the next two years the summer before.

I find the NCSSM Classes of 13 and 14 page really helpful. Not only do the seniors give some great advice, but you learn who is who and who does what within the school just in case you want to do a specific club/sport.

So I’ve been lurking on this forum for a while so I decided to go ahead a make a post.

I was accepted as a finalist to NCSSM on June 7th and just a few days ago I was informed about the 60 hrs of summer service,so I have been searching around for organizations to work for (which I thankfully found one,I start next week!). But my question is, if we don’t turn in our service forms today-which is the deadline-can I still put my hours on my service form next summer?

Also about Summer Ventures, just as a warning for those who have been accepted but also on the waitlist; the day after I got accepted into NCSSM, I got a call from App State saying that they would have to withdraw me from Summer Ventures since I got accepted into NCSSM and it was against their new policy. So basically, until the first day of Summer Ventures they can withdraw you from the program if you become a NCSSM finalist.

Also who else is going to the Minority Leadership program at NCSSM?Just wanted to see a number because I got the invitation too :)

The summer ventures thing has been a mess. Apparently, if you were waitlisted and get into NCSSM some sites will let you come IF the turn around time is too short for them to get someone to take your place. However at other sites they will do what they did to previous poster…just take you out. They need to nail down the policy.

As for summer service, our daughter got in last week too and called the school. She was told that she could have an extension to get her forms in. If you know where you will be working, maybe get them signed Monday and fax them in. It is very minimul paper work to submit at this point.

Congratulations on getting in!

If you are not yet aware, your parents should have received information on summer socials. We found out about them through a friend. They are summer gatherings for rising juniors and seniors (and recent graduates) and their families in various counties through out the state. In larger areas there may be more than one gathering.
Thought I would pass this on, especially to folks new off of the waitlist and some socials are this weekend!

T

Congrats to all the waitlist to finalist students and all those to come. My daughter too in now a finalist. How are parents to access the focus accounts now that students are finalists. Also @taben1112 how do you find summer socials in our area.

@Kelsey: I will attending the minority leadership program for males this summer. I don’t know if it will be at the same time as the one for the females but I heard that it was last year.

@alove: Parents are to access Focus by using your child’s user name and just add “.family” to the end. If they haven’t gotten it yet, then they need to email somebody at the school for their credentials (not sure who to email, but if you email some of the administrators, I think they would provide them to you). Also, you can find out about summer socials by having your child join the NCSSM Classes of 2013 and 2014 page if they haven’t yet and looking there (many many posts about them). Another way to find out is to email Ms. Taxis (taxis@ncssm.edu), who knows when and where most of the socials take place.

@alove74: We are not very facebook savvy in our house but there is a facebook page for past, present and future NCSSM parents. It is helpful and includes a document with the summer socials for all areas. There are plenty of new and former NCSSM parents on there, so you can get help there.
I emailed admissions re: moodle and the forwarded my request to someone in the admin. area…at that point we got moodle and FOCUS access from the parent side. You should also, in a few days, receive an email with all of the information regarding what forms you need to get in and how to access them. That came about 1 week after our daughter got in.
Glad your daughter is in!

Course registration question regarding the science requirements…
2 physics classes this year
1 biology course this year
2 Chemistry courses next year
1 biology course next year

Does this seem correct or should my daughter be getting in 2 physics and 2 biologies this year (she knows that she does not want to address Chem. until next year). We were all set with courses, but the second biology she wants is not fitting into her schedule well and that is what prompted the thought that she could pick it up next year (along with a 3rd bio. she is interested in).

Thoughts?
T

Also, are students given advisors? We’ve always been in schools where her advisor and counselor helped her make out her schedule. I am assuming this (doing it on your own) is another part of being independent at the school!
T

@taben: She can only do one biology if she wants and do the second senior year if she wants. I personally am doing two biologies this year so that it can free up space for some interdisciplinary and chemistry classes I want to take. And I believe that each of us are given advisors at the start of the school year, in addition to the SLI (like an adult residential coordinator for the hall).

Hey! Can you guys give me some advice for applying for NCSSM in the fall? Like what questions do they ask on the application?

Will the admissions office disclose to you what your position is on the waitlist if you ask ?

@Seaver…I am not sure if they will disclose a number. We have heard so many things regarding how the waitlist works. I don’t know what the ‘formula’ is. But, it probably would not be unacceptable to ask where you stand, in general. Remember, they accept students up until around Labor Day so there is lots of time left.

Hang in there. A lot of kids get in after school starts…and there is plenty of time left this summer.
T

I’m kind of late to the party, but I’m NCSSM online class of 2014.
I’m taking Intro to Western Political Thought and Honors Forensics, and hope to be able to take Applied Engineering or International Relations (or both!) in addition to Forensics in the spring semester.

I am currently a waitlister and I wanted to know how many people have become finalists and what my chances are. I am from district 13 and I have not heard from any other wait list students.

@kcarter…if you scroll through this thread you will see posts from a few other waitlist students. A couple have gotten in, a few are still on hold. As I posted above, do not give up hope as traditionally, we were told, many spots open up just before school begins and the first 2 weeks of school. It happens, kids change their minds about going and release their spots. As a student told my daughter, “As a waitlist student, you are IN…they just don’t have a bed for you…yet”. The beds do come open and there is a good chance you will get one. It is just timing.
It is a frustrating process…the waiting. The advice we gave her was to keep busy and (if you are inclinced) pray.
If you have any questions feel free to ask. I put a long post on this thread regarding how we were informed that she became a finalist, in response to several private messages we received asking how/when we were notified of her change of status. Lots of folks answered our questions during the application and notification process and we are certanily willing to ‘pay it forward’ now by now answering whatever we can.
T

Thank you so much!

Waitlist News, FYI…someone we know just got in last week. They are clearly still pulling from the waitlist. Also, dorm/roommate assignments come out within the next few days. That will make the residential life much more real. Some finalist students will likely decide it is not for them and back out. There is still time, waitlist folks. Hopefully those who are finalist who are not fully committed with back out sooner rather than later so that those of you waiting for spot will get ‘the call’!
