For those stressing out about teacher recommendations, one of my kid’s teachers did not turn in the recommendation last year (cue irritation). It did not matter. I asked admissions about it last year, and they said that’s why they ask for a few of them. Don’t stress if it’s only one rec----unless it’s from a key teacher you know would sing your praises. Given the restrictions about leaving campus (only 2 at a time) and lack of cars, it is very hard to swing off-site ECs. But, there are a ton of clubs and leadership opportunities within the campus to try out. The homework load at Smath will be significantly greater than at your home school.

I heard from a friend that there are THREE different discovery day tests: Algebra, Geometry, and mixed. Is this true?

D: I sure hope not! I thought there was only one!

Only one 30-minute test of basic math skills. Very straight forward, no tricks, but no calculators allowed. Good luck!

@TaylorBrill , did you actually attend DDay March 1st this year? I only ask because I feel that NCSSM is changing the procedures this year.

I attended with my daughter who took the test. All the kids came out and said it was easy math, difficult only because of the number of problems to get through.

How many problems were there?

Not sure – my daughter is out tonight – but I think it was 25.

@TaylorBrill Thanks! I wonder if they value completing the test in its entirety or the accuracy of answers more.

Also, does anyone know how many people (boys and girls) are accepted to the Residential program this year?

@TaylorBrill Oh, okay! Thank you very much!

Anybody know if NCSSM admissions still uses that “rubric” with 35 points and three scorers for admissions?

@willsister1 Does that mean CFNC isn’t updated?

This is some advice from a current student at NCSSM
In my opinion, an applicant that is well rounded will be looked upon very well.
This year there are 320 spots with roughly 1300 applicants. This means a little less than a 25% acceptance rate.
In general, I think most students that are in the top of their high school rankings, and have taken rigorous courses will do well. I was in IB, so I did that and took AP electives.
SAT scores are really district dependent, for example I am from Charlotte, so District 9, and because Charlotte is so huge, this means that there are a lot of applicants, and therefore a need for a competitive SAT score.
As for extracurriculars, it really doesn’t matter as long as you are really strong at what you do and are interested in, and show interest in the other fields besides math and science.

@galaxyunicorn I don’t think it’s updated since that was in 2006. (I may be wrong though)
Also the whole admissions process has changed since 2006, so that rubric may also be changed.

@galaxyunicorn Yeah, I also want to know if the want more accuracy or more completed.

@antismathmatter That makes me feel a little bit better, knowing that they look for a well-rounded student

@songbird13 Same here! I want to make sure I have the right answer. Lucky for me, I have no school today! It looks like I will be cramming for the test tomorrow! That would be so cool if we saw each other. I’m from CD6, you?

@WhiteRabbit98 I’m too tired to think, tagged myself in the last post instead of you! I need to sleep.

@songbird13 Haha, I noticed that! And I don’t have any school today, either. (Fist pump) But shucks, we’re from the same CD. I’m in CD 6 too… D:

@galaxyunicorn I’m pretty sure things have changed since 2006. I doubt that they use the exact same rubric, but maybe they use one similar to it.

It was only one 30 minute long test. It did cover Algebra, Geometry and Alg II. I took it on March 1st. Don’t stress about it you guys! @pikachu2k7
@pastelblue My CFNC had first semester grades. I would go ask your guidance counselor about it!

@WhiteRabbit98 Ah! Best case scenario: We both make it in!

@willsister1 How much Geometry and Alg II is on it? I’m in Alg II right now (My school doesn’t let sophomores take PreCalc) and my teacher isn’t exactly the best.

I’m so nervous about the Discovery Day test because I just feel like I have to do good on it to have a chance. All the other parts of my application are okay, but not great, so I feel like a weak spot would hurt me.

@willsister1 I have the same question as songbird13. How much Geometry and Algebra II is on the Discovery Day test?

@songbird13 I really hope we both make it in!
