NCSSM Class of 2018 - Future Applicants

@thatasiankid Thank you! What are you tasked with in work service?

@Pheeziks Everything is within close proximity to each other. You do not have to walk a long distance from the dorms to the buildings were the classes are held. As for “overloading” or taking more classes, here is what I found on The Path to SMATH Class of 20016 blog:

“With classes, you need a minimum of 5 cores per trimester (I think first trimester you only need to take 4.) Taking more than the minimum amount of cores(overloading) requires registrar approval and decent grades. (I overloaded first trimester with 5 core classes). Not every class at NCSSM is a core though, which means you can still take more than 5 classes total per trimester, and you have room for up to 8 classes. There’s only 7 periods in a school day, so how does this work? Well, not every class meets every day. I took 7 classes during first trimester total, because I took 5 cores, a PA class, and ResEd (required during first tri). I didn’t have a lot of free blocks/sleepins during first trimester; that’s just how first tri works. During 2nd tri, classes like Amstud start meeting less (5 periods a week to 4 periods a week) and I saw my schedule getting better.”

I hope that helps!

@thatasiankid I love the idea of the service hours! I volunteer a lot but if I got into Smath, I realize that I would more than likely have to cut back. Are you still able to take the music classes that you want? Thanks!

@babyshuf2 I do know that NCSSM requires you to complete a certain number of service hours over the summer with a nonprofit organization. They usually have some opportunities open during the year but I’m not sure how that works. My friend from CO '15 came home on extendeds and usually did some community service then. I agree, it is disadvantageous to not be able to do as much service at SMath than what we are doing at home.
@thatasiankid could you elaborate about service? I don’t know much about it either

@Pheeziks @babyshuf2 @dancingdisaster

At NCSSM students are required to complete 3 hours a week. These jobs can range from doing jobs such as just shredding papers to working in the cafeteria. As juniors you are assigned 3 different jobs for the year, one for each trimester. Every junior must work 1 trimester in Grounds or Cafeteria.

@babyshuf2

I am still able to fit in my music electives but honestly it’s a bit hard fitting in time to practice as I am also currently playing a sport on top of everything that I already have going on. Do not fret, doing music here is certainly manageable.

@Pheeziks

I work in the mailroom. I deliver packages to faculty and I help students pick up their packages when they receive them.

@thatasiankid Are you able to manage a sport with coursework? I understand that it will be difficult but I can’t go a year without swim  if we’re trying to manage a sport and schoolwork together, what would you recommend? Is swim a second tri sport? Thanks!

@dancingdisaster It looks like swimming is a 2nd trimester sport: http://www.gounis.com/sports/swimdive/2014-15/schedule

@pheeziks thanks! It looks like it has a much shorter season than my school as well. Gosh, I feel like I’m getting prematurely overexcited about this school…

Anyone here from CD11? I’m wondering how competitive it is.

NCSSM Admissions came out to my school yesterday! They did a presentation and I pretty much knew everything already but I was still excited to hear it again…ha. I asked a few questions but nothing too complicated. I was shocked to see such a small number of people in attendance. About 8 people are applying this year, which is not many from a hs with approx. 500+ sophomores!!! Anyway, I don’t care, I’m applying  Is anybody else getting REALLY EXCITED!!!

Does anyone know how competitive district 7 is???

@jswani

Hi I’m a current junior attending NCSSM who is from CD11. I would not say it is as competitive as say CD4 but you shouldn’t really worry about these things and just try and do your best and have the strongest application that you can possibly have.

I like what you said about having a strong application! That is what I’m trying. I got stressed early this week when I found out that some people who are applying have like 5 APs and I only have 3 :frowning: I got some motivation from a current NCSSM junior and realized that they are not just looking at the number of APs you take, they are looking at the WHOLE entire person. So I really need to reflect that in my app!!! @thatasiankid Thanks!

I am a sophomore in the ninth congressional district, and I am planning on applying to NCSSM this year. I just wanted to share my “credentials”, for lack of a better word, and ask people who have experienced the admission process their opinion. Here goes.

Freshman Classes:

English I Honors
Math III Honors
Chemistry Honors
World History Honors

English II Honors
Pre Calc Honors
Gym
Civics Honors

Sophomore Classes:

Calculus AB-BC
AP Lang Companion Class
AP Environmental Science
Chinese III Honors

Calculus AB-BC
AP Lang
Programming Honors
Chinese IV

My Current weighted GPA is 4.875, unweighted 4.0.

Volunteer Work: I volunteer at a senior citizen center every Saturday, and I run the entire sound and slide system for my morning Mass on Sundays. I have been doing both of these for over a year and together they have probably amounted to about 160 hours.

This year my extracurriculars include Science Olympiad, Speech and Debate, Science National Honor Society, and HOSA.

Over the past two summers I went to two different Duke TiP summer programs at Georgia Tech and Duke, to study Biomedical Engineering and Genetics, respectively.

Anyway, I have been taking pretty challenging courses, and doing my best to keep up extracurriculars and volunteer activities. What do you think my chances are? I’m kind of freaking out.

@Pheeziks You, sir, are somebody I would like to be friends with if I get in. Is it weird that I’m already thinking about what people I will be buddies with? Haha, see you on campus.

@IHaveAMilkChance YOU, SIR/MA’AM NEED TO HELP ME OUT HERE. Hopefully you have the time to look at my stats and tell me what I need to improve on? Thanks a million.

@babyshuf2 the amount of drive you have is inspiring. Don’t even think about not getting in, because you will.

So I’ve been really contemplating wether to even apply to Ncssm, I don’t feel I am goo enough to be honest. Would anyone be nice enough to read my stats and tell me my chances?

I’m in CD 13, which I have no idea how competitive that is, could anyone tell me? (Will probably be a main deciding factor)

The classes I’ve taken/am going to take are:

9th grade-
World History Honors: A+
English 1 Honors: A
Agriscience: B (I had a mean teacher)
PE: A+
Environmental Science Honors: A+
Visual Arts (beginners):A
Math 2 Honors:A+
Animal Science 1:A+

10th grade-
Visual Arts (intermediate): A+
Biology Honors:A+
Physical Fitness: A+
English 2 honors: A
(Next semester)-
Math 3 Honors
Animal Science 2 Honors
Civics & Economics Honors
Agriculture Mechanics.

Current GPA: UW-3.95 (they don’t say weighed)

Looking at other peoples classes makes me feel sucky because at my school you aren’t allowed to double up on Math and they don’t offer AP classes until junior year, so I’m a failure compared to everyone else’s stats.

My SAT was 1900 (schools average is 1200) and I’m planning on taking it again in November.

Awards/Honors: Greenhand and Discovery Degree, Most Outstanding Animal Science Student, 3rd place Science issues debate team in state, 1st and 2nd places in local science competitions, 1st place in regional spelling bee, 1st place in local, regional, and state art competions

Volunteer work: 20 hours a month for 3 years in nursing home, 35 hour tootsie roll drive, over 400 hours with “Mormon Helping Hands” group, 30+ hours cleaning local cemeteries, 40+ FFA hours (loading sold items, fair booths, etc.) 35 hours working at republican fair booth(my parents are big republicans) tutored math 8th-10th grade

Extracurriculars: 4 years of tennis, 1st place in state-All star cheerleader, school rec and all star softball, over 6 CDEs with FFA

I really love STEM but I’m scared to even apply… Should I?

Also good luck to everyone who is applying

@OmegaDrive02 …You have some awesome stats! I wish that I had been able to get far ahead in math but skipping the 9th grade prevented that :frowning: It is cool that you are taking Chinese III. I go to Chinese school on the weekend and I really enjoy it. I was hoping to do a language immersion in China this summer but I’m not sure if it will work out. Your stats look very strong and I’m sure you will get in
