NCSSM Class of 2018 - Future Applicants

@giantsnails I would love to contribute.

So I’m new to this thread, so I should mention that I am applying for NCSSM this year. My application is submitted and now I am awaiting my UniApp login, which is killing me. I don’t like the “waiting period” haha. Not only that, I was not so smart and was only able to sign up for the very last SAT that would be accepted (long story there). To make things even better, it’s snowed today (Wednesday) and my test is this weekend (Saturday) which poses the problem of it being postponed and thus kissing my application goodbye. Saying the least, I’m slightly stressed. By that I mean I am so stressed I am about to the point of sweating blood (kidding). I want nothing more than to get into NCSSM. I would have to say NCSSM is like they took everything I love and made a school based on the blueprints. I’m very open for anyone to contact me that is going through this process as well! In other words, I’m in need of some support and “suffer” buddies! Good luck to everyone!

Follow my blog! I’ll be posting about my journey through the NCSSM application process  https://smathexperiencecom.■■■■■■■■■■■■■/

@unicornhopeful if you’re from CD 9 like I am, they’ve cancelled most of the SAT administrations…

Here is the cancellation list… I’m prayin’ for you all!

I have a kinda ncssm blog, but it’s also my personal blog, so private message me if you’re at all interested

Hey guys! New blog post on http://www.pathtosmath2018.■■■■■■■■■■■■■

Hey guys,
I’m class of 2019 and I want some advice,…
I’m in the triangle area (Greensboro) and I’m very new to this state. I’m going to apply to NCSSM next year.
My freshmen classes are:
Math 3 Honors
English 1 Honors
Biology Honors
Spanish 3 Honors
Gym
Band

My GPA so far is 3.95

I’m planing to take as many AP’s as I can for my sophomore year. But my school doesn’t really allow me to take AP Chem or AP physics without taking regular first…and I can’t take both. My former school allowed sophomores take AP Chem and AP physics the same year.

Do you think NCSSM will see what courses my school allows me to take?

I do tennis and I play the saxophone and I’ve won some awards for that. I’ve been in some science clubs at my former school. I’ve won an video editing contest and I’ve attended some computer coding classes. I code occasionally html. I’m planning to join some math clubs here at my new school.

I’m not very good at the SAT. I usually get around 1500-1600. Do you think they’ll throw out my application if I don’t get at least a 1900?

Any advice will help.

@ramen01 Okay, a few pieces of advice.

I’d take AP Chemistry rather than AP Physics. AP Chemistry is generally regarded as harder, and will look better.

NCSSM will not know what classes are offered at your school except by looking at other applicants from your school. Be sure to mention the lack of AP options in your essays.

Third, try and start a club or become a President or Vice-President of a club. Leadership looks great to the school. Your sports and band will also look good.

Finally, and most importantly… You are in a very competitive district. If my memory serves me correctly, you are in the most competitive district – You need to improve your SAT score. By a lot. You should start studying now, and you probably want over a 2000 to stand a chance with other students in your district.

Good luck, and godspeed.

Hey all!

I’m going to take the time here to plug my recently created blog: Journey to NCSSM. We currently have two posts, three authors (including @Terminator3136), and will be posting daily. I’d love it if you would check it all out. Students in the Class of 2019 or higher, fear not. Advice for students applying in the future is coming soon!

Thank you all, be sure to check it out.

@smather2018 thank you so much for the advice! I’m actually quite surprised that Greensboro is competitive… I started a club outside of school and it’s going well, do you think that counts? It’s a volunteering club.

NCSSM, as you may have heard, tries to take in kids from all 13 congressional districts in North Carolina. Greensboro is actually split into two congressional districts, CD6 and CD12. You can google what district you’re in, and here’s some data on how competitive each one is, by % accepted. http://i.i m g u r.com/ntwS7Nz.png (remove the spaces)

I have a bit of dilemma. For my recommendations I have only one math teacher, even though I made a 99 (the highest grade after that was 84 because she was a bad teacher) the teacher does not like me. I’m not exaggerating. When I would ask questions she would answer them sarcastically and make me feel dumb. When I tried to stay after class to better grasp a subject she said she would be there but then she left. I had to sit at my school for 2 hours for no reason and she ignored me when I repeadetly asked her about it the next day. She said if I asked again she would write me up. She really didn’t like me, and also I found out her son is applying this year. What if this affects what she says in her recommendations? I know I should never doubt the integrity of a teacher but I’m a little bit stressed.

Hi guys, I would like some advice on what to do
On my December SAT I got 2310 but was planning to retake in January to get 2350-2400 however as you know, the test was rescheduled to be February 20th. I also got into the Eastern Regional Orchestra which is on the same date, and my jazz ensemble is playing at the UNC Jazz Fest on the same date as well…so I have two options. I can either take the SAT and maybe play in the Jazz fest (depending on when we are playing), or I can play in the orchestra and drop out out of the SAT and the Jazz fest (there is a backup drummer for me). If I forfeit the orchestra I cannot audition next year either…but I studied a lot for the SAT and know I’m probably capable of getting a 2400 in February.
Does anyone know if there’s any kind of alternate test date for the February 20th makeup date or any way I can take the SAT on another day? It is the last issuing of the old format. I know my score is already good but I could possibly get a perfect score and I really want to try again :frowning: since my December test was my first test…
Does playing in the Orchestra this year and next year look better than a 2400? Which one is worth it more? I am quite stuck on what to do. And I’m asking with considerations for my NCSSM app as well as for my future college apps.

@Uniqueleaf A score of 2310 is beyond the point – for any district – where the score is still a factor. It’s high enough where it would not negatively impact your application, and where getting it 40-90 points higher wouldn’t be worth anything but to say “I got a score of x!”

If I were you, I would play in the Jazz Fest.

I am a sophomore applying to NCSSM from CD 11.

My current classes consists of:

Fall Semester:

Math III Honors
Mandarin II
AP Biology
Chemistry Honors
Foods 1 ( My School requires us to take a CTE course)

Spring Semester:

Pre-Calc Honors
Mandarin III Honors
English II Honors
Civics Honors
AP Biology

Class Rank: 2 GPA weighted: 4.5 Not weighted: 4.0

SAT Scores: 1670

School Clubs:

  • FBLA
  • President of Student Council
  • FTA
  • Special Olympics Partners
  • Yearbook Club
  • Math Club

Sports/ Activities:

  • Orchestra
  • Piano
  • Band
  • Varsity Cheer
  • Dance

My school does not allow Freshmen to take AP courses. I was lucky enough to even get into the AP Bio course this year due to the slots being filled by upperclassmen. I know these are not the best stats by far but I was wondering what my chances were out of the CD 11 area. Thanks!

@smather2018
Thanks for your reply. I resolved the issue by finding a test center issuing the SAT on February 27th, though I had to request to move my Discovery Day. Sadly I still can’t play in the Jazz thing I have to do orchestra lol ;-;

@Uniqueleaf do you mean the 20th? NCSSM will not be accepting scores on February 27th.

@Ahalise You look good, but you need to get your SAT score up at least two-hundred points.

No, i mean the 27th. I know, but my first score is good enough for NCSSM. I want to retake it just because I know i can do better and it will count for college. @smather2018
