Ncssm?

Hi, I was just wondering what my chances were for S&M...
My sister went there about 4-5 years ago, so I know about the school. She also said that siblings of graduates have higher chances, is that true?
I'm excited to apply so that I can take more challenging/interesting classes and meet new people.

First off, my school doesn't offer AP classes to freshmen/sophomores, so there's that. My school is kinda awful. It's overcrowded and most of the ECs are business classes.

Before High school, I took Algebra 1 (B) and Spanish 1 (B).
Freshman Year Classes:
Art 1 - A
H Eng 1 -A
Health/PE - A
Creative Writing - A
H Bio - A
H World History - A
Spanish 2 - A
H Geometry - A

Sophomore Year Classes:
I'm currently taking H Spanish 3, Art 2, H Eng 2, H Alg 2.
Next sem. I'll be taking: Crafts 2, Sci & Vis Technology, H Civics, H Chem, and H PreCal online through NCVPS.
I am more interested in science than math, but I do think math is fun as well, haha.

I don't do any sports. Last year, I was VP of Art Club and gained about 15hrs of volunteer hours (mainly through art projects, of which one I helped organize in my school). Last summer I did a 3-week art program with UNCSA, which also has a residential high school program.
This year, I'm starting a Literature Club (I'm big into creative writing, and I've had a poem published. I'm not worried about the NCSSM essays much, because I love writing essays :) ) and I am Senior VP of Art Club. I also plan on getting some more volunteer hours and joining some more clubs, like Key Club and International Club.

I live in Cornelius, so I think I'm in district 9.

I'm taking the PSAT in October, and I'm enrolled to take the SAT in November. I think I'll do really well, especially in reading/writing. I'm just worried about making simple mistakes in the math portion, but I've been studying for it all summer, so hopefully I'll do great! My sister got an almost perfect score, 2200 something, so hopefully scoring well on the SAT is hereditary!

Just to note, I'm also applying to UNCSA as a safety school, but I REALLY want to go to NCSSM.

If your high school is ‘weak’ they know this and it can help or hurt you. The ‘help’ part is that you did the best you could with what you had. The ‘hurt’ part is that your GPA might not be as high had you been in a highly competitive school (like Country Day or Myers Park IB). You will need a strong SAT to combat this. Also, they want diversity and girls. So, your gender may help.
Just curious…what is your art for UNCSA and why not that school over NCSSM?

Thanks!

I’m applying for Visual Arts with UNCSA
Like I said, I attended the UNCSA summer program and got a feel for the school.
It’s a great place, I loved the school and made some new friends.

But, I don’t want to sound like I’m generalizing the school, but a good number of the kids were hippie/hipster types who cared only for their art and then with drugs and all that, I wasn’t really interested. I know it’s just the summer program, but I have a feeling it’s somewhat comparable to the normal school kids.

I like NCSSM because it’s just a school full of nerds! And everyone knows each other. I’d rather be where education has more priority.
but I just really want to get out of my current school. I love UNCSA and NCSSM, and would be honored to get accepted to either. I just like NCSSM a little more because of the people.

I know those are HUGE generalizations, but it contains truth.

Hey there, laurieo!

I am currently a sophomore at UNCSA in the music department and I am also applying for NCSSM. I live a few towns over from Cornelius, so we are in the same district. Also you mentioned that you are really into creative writing and so am I! It seems we have a lot in common!

So first we’ll talk about UNCSA. Honestly, I don’t think that you should have any problem getting in. The school doesn’t care about academics and it seems that you are really into your art, so I’m sure it will be easy for you. I can understand your generalization about drugs and hippies on campus. You are completely right. There are many people like that. The environment does have that liberal, pot-smoking, gay vibe, so if you’re not comfortable with that, I can completely understand why it is a far second to NCSSM.

I also would prefer to go to NCSSM for the same reason that you would. I would love to be surrounded by nerds, too! I have no idea what your odds are for getting into NCSSM any more than I know what my odds are, but I do know that the lack of classes may help or hinder you, like taben said.

I hope this helped! If you would like for me to set you up with some contacts in the VA department at UNCSA, you can send me a private message. Hopefully we can get through these applications together :)

Good luck!

Hi, I’m currently enrolled in NCSSM- online, and applying for UNCSA’s high school drama program. You can have the best of both worlds!
