So I’m applying to NCSU as a transfer student from a community college to study architecture and because my community college does not offer a studio class which is required for all five years of architecture an advisor advised me to transfer early after completing 30 credits of general education. now that I am applying, I am also working on my portfolio and I need help with that yet no one from my school seems willing to help me with that, so I’m wondering if anyone here could give me any tips, refer me to anyone, or show me sample portfolios. Thank you in advance
I am in the architecture business and taught a portfolio class. I am more familiar with portfolios for students graduating, who tend to have a body of studio work to present. I assume most of what you have for a portfolio is art based or sketching you’ve done on your own. It’s best to digitize your work by scanning it into a computer and saving the work as high quality image files (jpeg). Then use a program like PowerPoint or InDesign to create a base page template (I suggest 11x17 size in a landscape format) and then place your work on the pages and provide titles and descriptions of what you are presenting. Example, if you are showing a still life sketched in charcoal from a high school art class, give the year in school you did the work and a description of the parameters of the assignment and media used. Keep in mind a portfolio for a student at your level can include high school artwork, computer drawings, hand sketches, photography, models, computer graphics you designed, just be sure what you submit is your own and is representative of your talents. If it’s group work, indicate your part. Once you have the portfolio together, make it into a PDF that is sized so it can be emailed. It’s also wise to confirm if the school you are applying to has size requirements for the portfolio before starting.
My child went through this a few years ago and was one of 40 students accepted. I think you need things in your portfolio that are drawing related but the selection team likes to see you think outside the box also. Three-dimensional objects. Examples. a dress you have designed, a model you designed and built. My child also interviewed in Charlotte and someone brought in a two tier cake they designed and created. Their interviews are face to face where NCSU is electronic submission.
Thank you so much. for submitting the work, they have a web page that i am supposed to submit my work into so I don’t think i have to scan any of the works. but thanks again that was very helpful ^^.
thank you so much, I was told the same thing by other people so I guess I’ll try my best to do some 3D work.
