Design portfolio help/choosing the right school

I'm a rising Senior is NC and have been interested in graphic design for a while now. I'm the editor-in-chief of yearbook, have taken art classes throughout high school, as well as being obsessed with Adobe Photoshop. I have pieces that I would like to put into my portfolio but I am still needing a few more ideas that will help to make me stand out.

I'm stuck on the type of work I should create on the computer, most likely through photoshop. If there are any suggestions or directions someone can lead me in, that would be great! I'm also open for any other unique ideas using any mediums.

Also, this summer I am interning at a design department. It is a tile, marble, terazzo, and granite based company that creates large mosaics, designs, and other works of art for floors, walls, tables etc. in huge well known areas and buildings such as hotels and airports around the country. They are letting me design a few things for them as well as helping them with other projects. Will this in any way help me with getting into a design school?

Last thing. The main school I am looking into is NC State College of Design. Is this a good school to be looking at? I'm not planning on going to school a great distance from where I live (NC), so are there any other schools around me that are worth applying to?
