Thanks! @PhilipM I also got an email saying there was an update on my Wolfpaw account, and when I checked it there was an acceptance letter PDF and an option to accept the offer. I applied and got into the Art + Design program.
I just want to clear up a few things for the people that have applied to the College of Architecture that have not received acceptance letters. Yes, last year about 40 people will receive letters this time of the year that says they are accepted to the School of Design. Most of them are NOT going to accept their admission (they used NCSU as their safe choice and are waiting on Virginia Tech, Clemson and other places to decide) and the next group will be invited to Admissions Review Day and from that most of the TRUE acceptances will come from. I’m telling you this so that the people that don’t get acceptance letters don’t get frustrated and think that you will not have a chance to get in. At the end of the four years, those that got in first means nothing as well as who got in last. It’s strictly how your portfolio looks. My friend got accepted into Physical Therapy school the day before classes started. The number 1 pick flunked out. Guess who has the license. So don’t let anything get in your head. Know the end result and march on.
Well we have been on quite the rollercoaster of emotion here at our house the past 24 hrs, from joy to disappointment back to, if not joy, satisfied happiness.
My D received her NCSU admission decision yesterday. She was admitted to NC State but to her second choice, College of Humanities and Social Sciences, not her first choice College of Design. So upon opening the letter and seeing “congratulations”, she experienced initial joy, but that was quickly followed by disappointment when she got to page 2 and saw she had not been accepted into COD. I was, frankly, not that surprised by this outcome because My D’s interest in art and deign is relatively recent and narrowly scoped in the digital sphere, so her art portfolio and formal training are limited, but she has very strong grades and test scores in all subjects that fall within CHASS.
Well it turns out that perhaps CHASS is the better fit anyway. My D is primarily interested in game design and reflected that interest in her essays, noting that the Animation and Interactive Media program in COD seemed like a good fit. But, in an effort to convince her that getting into CHASS isn’t a tragedy, I discovered something we had previously overlooked in our research into NCSU. CHASS’ communications/media program has an explicity game design aspect, to include its own Mobile Gaming Research Lab, while the COD animation program does not explicitly address games. So, when I showed this to my D, and suggested that perhaps a CHASS media/games concentration coupled with a COD art minor and/or computer science classes from the Comp Sci school’s gaming program, would get her the game design program she seeks, happiness/excitement returned.
My D is intersted mostly in tne storytelling and art aspects of games, but also wants to develop some comp sci skills, so it seems her life as an NCSU student might cross three differnt schools. Since both COD and the Computer Science school offer minors – the latter itself has a gaming concentration so lots of game related comp sci classes available – and the CHASS prgram is all about the storrytelling piece, it appears my D would have plenty of opportunity to forge an interdisciplinary program focused on game design and development as a CHASS student. Anyway, she clearly has more research to do to determine whether NCSU is a good fit even though she did not get her first choice. CHASS might vey well be the right place for her.
So all is good here now, and I half expect the admissions people at NCSU, seeing her explicit interest in game design, accepted My D into the program they thought best fit her interests, rather than just relying on how she understood their programs. Apologies for the lengthy, somewhat off COD post, but I would encourage all students to remeber that there are lots of paths to get to where you want to be, and often one closed door lets you find a different but perhaps better open one.
@PhilipM Congratulations to your daughter & the realization of the better fit.
I got my email on the 21st in which the first page stated that I got in to the university, but the second page had “Congratulations on your acceptance!” and had a section called “Admission Information” which had the following information:
Student ID:
Student Type: Freshman
Term: Fall 2018
Program: Graphic Design (Application Deadline Oct 15)
College: College of Design
Tuition Classification:
Since it says that the program is Graphic Design under Admission Info, does this mean I’m in the COD? Or do I have to wait for more notifications regarding Review Day?
Has anyone heard back about review day or anything since the 21st? The notifications should be sent out in December right? Its already December 30, and the wait is killing me, honestly at this point I just want to hear something from them whether or not it turns out to be good or bad news
Also I currently am an NC state student, so is notification for acceptance different in any way for those who do CODA?
Still waiting also.
What does it mean if you got invited to the showcase?
The website says: “Applicants continuing in the review process will be invited to Admissions Review Day or a Showcase in January.” and “The Showcase is a non-mandatory, information session. This is by invite only”
So I’m guessing that means you got accepted without an interview!
That’s what I originally thought, but unlike the others who have been accepted, I haven’t been sent an email or anything. Has anyone else received the showcase invitation or know what it is?
My daughter got a letter yesterday, inviting her for an interview and portfolio review for the College of Design. Her attendance of this event is mandatory on Jan. 20. Wondering what her chances are and how many will be admitted? Anyone been to this event before? would love any info.
Are people getting real letters and/or notification by email/wolfpaw? Has anyone heard from architecture yet?
Which department? And was it a real letter or an email?
@designmum Which department did your daughter apply to? At Open House, the Art + Design department head informed us that around 60 are given portfolio review and around 30 are accepted, so around a 50% chance. Of course, that final number includes those extended early acceptance as well though.
@designmum Congrats to your D for the review! You might want to look back at previous CoD posts from the years past to gain insight. The procedure could have changed, but in the past all the invitees and parents will meet in a large auditiorum in one of the design buildings. Some of the professors and current students will give an overview of the program and answer some of your questions. We found this very helpful & nerve wracking in anticipation. Hopefully, Tameka will be there to calm some nerves. She is great! During this time, students will be randomly called to leave for their interview, while you stay seated in the auditorium. They will meet with one or more of the design professors and discuss their portfolio. I know it sounds scary, but your D will do her best if she can relax and enjoy talking about her pieces. Afterwards, go get some Howling Cow ice cream at Talley to celebrate getting this far.
She got an actual letter with details on what to bring for portfolio review. We found no information on her wolfpaw account and did not get an email. It was dated Dec 21, but didn’t show up till the 30th. She applied for the graphic design program. She’s a little nervous because a girl at her school got accepted in the Architecture program without this review step more than 2 weeks ago.
Thanks for all the info above and good luck to everybody!!
@designmum - thanks! I’m glad to help. Let me know if you have further questions.
BTW FWIW: If anyone wants (shy whispering), you can give comments a “like” or “helpful” vote to show some love.
I received a"real letter" invitation to the showcase on the 20th. It says I am still being considered for the architecture program, but I have not been accepted. No interviews or portfolio discussions at this event…
Has there been any change in your Wolfpaw account at all?
No : (. It sounds like the interviews are on the same day? It just seems weird that this is just a presentation?
