NCSU Early Action Fall 2023

Yes. All students that are interested in engineering have to CODA after completion of prereq courses. There are several responses up above that you may wish to look up along with the information on NCSU’s website.

My daughter is on her way down to to NCState for admitted student day tmr. Does anyone have experience with the school to give a recommendation of a restaurant on campus or near campus for dinner. Hoping for a place where she can feel the vibe of the school. Thanks!

Player’s Retreat probably has the most NC State vibe, and surprisingly good food for a bar-type atmosphere, Gonza Tacos (both of those restaurants are near Bell Tower), Gym Tacos is farther down Hillsborough St. but very good. Village District is around the corner from NC State with a lot of nice shops and restaurants, and it’s a good place for walking around. Trophy Pizza is also close and great pizza.

Mitch’s Tavern is also on Hillsborough St., great food and atmosphere, plus a scene from Bull Durham was filmed there

thank you so much!

Son got offer for Honors Program. Need guidance is there any advantage joining ?

Same, daughter got in to Honors. Is it worth it aside from the nice dorms?

Mine got into honors too. I have heard that there are professors that only teach honors classes and that those professors are better than others. I have no clue if that is accurate though. Also heard that the dorms are better and have a dining hall right near them. Downsides: more work since you have to do seminars and that the students often keep their doors closed in the dorms (since they are studying). Again, I don’t know if this is the norm or it was more so one year over another.

Son on wait list/alternate for honors. Was a Park semi-finalist so a bit perplexed.

Yes, all Engineering First Year (EFY) students need to CODA into their after completing their CODA classes (Chem 101, Physics 205, Math 141 and 241, and some easier intro engineering courses). CS might have a CS class they need too.

Responding too late to help, but Amedeo’s on Western Blvd is an NCSU icon. Great food and an amazing Wolfpack atmosphere.

The program changed when my student joined a few years ago. NCSU merged “Honors” and “Scholars” into one program. They were separate and a bit confusing before. Didn’t live in the dorms, but enjoyed the seminar classes and the forums. There was always something different to learn about. It does a few hours away from the week, but worth it. IMO especially good to have non-STEM content for an engineering student buried in calculations.

The biggest pro was registering for classes early. It’s about one day before the rest of their class would. For example, if freshman status students registration opens up on Mar 20, Honors could register Mar 19. Or if a sophomore status student usually is Mar 15, Honors opens Mar 14.

Not necessarily nice dorms. None of the dorms at NCSU are great. I think they are all mediocre at best. Honors does have their own nice quad, but the rooms are some of the smallest on campus. My student opted out of the village and enjoyed where they lived, and in asking after they were there a while they were glad they didn’t do honors village. Said it was too quiet and the dorms a bit removed from the heart of the campus.

Same happened to my daughter.

Sorry to hear. Very disappointing. It was DS favorite school since first time visit couple years ago. So excited when he was semi-finalist and then downhill since. No other merit aid and no honors so he is sadly moving on to other schools who came through on scholarships. How about you?

Deferred decisions are said to come out March 30, but they only release decisions on Fridays, rarely any other days. Every other year they’ve released decisions last Friday in March, but the last Friday is the 31st. I’m thinking they’re coming out the Friday before tbh. That’s the best chance I think.

Thank you so much!

Daughter got many great scholarships at OOS engineering schools - MI, UVA, UConn, UDelaware (good for Chem Eng.), but even with their offers, in-state with minimum scholarships is a far better deal. We wildly disagree with most schools’ “determined financial need,” unsurprisingly  It’s been a big letdown for a kid intent on going OOS. We’re still deciding between UNC and NCState. The latter threw her a $5k bone and the former some work study. We’re blessed with good in state institutions, but I would do it all differently from a heartbreak perspective if I knew maxing out oos merit scholarships still wouldn’t get us close on COA. We’ve got two hail mary ivies we’re waiting on and then it will be up to her to choose. Hope you all are finding some excitement in whatever options you have that are feasible.

and is that $5k just the standard unsubsidized federal loan?
