ND v. Georgetown

Hi there.

I am debating between these two schools. Very interested in pre-med, open to other things as well. I am a rather girly-girl, non-jock. I hate to use the term girly girl but... that's what I am. I enjoy running and tennis, but failed rather miserably at most other team sports, haha. Since I am an east coaster everyone is telling me that Georgetown is a better fit for the "type" of person I am. I love cities also, and for most of my life assumed I would go to Georgetown for reasons I can't really explain. I always thought it fit what I wanted in a college. I love the idea of urban access, and the lack of sororities. I'd like to avoid a cliquish environment as much as possible.

BUT! I visited my cousin (a senior) at Notre Dame in the fall and absolutely loved it. I got a much better vibe from the school - the people seemed so much friendlier, and the campus and student body overall felt much more unified. It seemed "different" from what I'm used to, maybe it's the midwestern feel. Georgetown, at least the group I hung out with, reminded me a bit of my high school (which is a huge Georgetown feeder). I'm kind of worried I won't fit in as a non-athlete, though I'd be willing to attempt intramurals. I'm' also interested in music groups, instrumental and voice.

My ex boyfriend is also mocking me relentlessly - he is currently at ND and thinks I am following him there since my interest in the school is rather new but... that is definitely NOT the case. Not interested at all anymore, ha. Although the fact that people think I am following him there is somewhat bothersome to me, although it shouldn't be.

Don’t worry about the ex boyfriend thing. Its a big enough school that you won’t have see him. They are both great schools. How you “feel” is very important to the choice. I suspect you will end up very happy at either one.

I agree that there’s a good chance you’ll be happy wherever you end up, but I just wanted to say - don’t worry about being a non-athlete! I am not involved in athletics at all, and I have several friends who aren’t either. There’s plenty to get involved in besides sports. That being said, intramurals are definitely a good way to make friends and have fun!

Notre Dame really does have that Midwestern friendliness and strong sense of community, which I love. Still, if you love the city, you’re probably aware South Bend isn’t much. Chicago’s not too far though, and some people take trips there on the weekend. Either way, good luck with your decision!

I actually didn’t mind South Bend that much. Everyone was telling me how awful it was… I didn’t think it was THAT bad. We went to a quirky pizza place that I enjoyed and I’ve heard they have been trying to build up the area south of campus. I spent some time in Chicago that weekend also and it was great! Notre Dame really is an unexpected choice for me… I visited completely on a whim not expecting to enjoy my time and it ended up in my top two.

Is it possible to major at Mendoza and complete the pre-med requirements? Some folks mentioned science-business.

I agree with everyone that says Notre Dame has a great vibe! My daughter has grown up in a very urban environment (San Francisco) and attends a Jesuit high school so I expected her to love Georgetown and feel just OK about Notre Dame and South Bend. Boy was I wrong! She absolutely fell in love with Notre Dame and said it felt “friendlier” and more like a close knit community than Georgetown. Both great schools though so you can’t go go wrong!
