NEC Prep Jazz Program

My daughter, a vocalist who switched from classical to jazz, started the NEC Prep Jazz Program this past summer. She started small with a private voice lesson and an ensemble over the summer to see if she liked it. Now she is taking jazz theory and jazz analysis classes in addition to an ensemble and private voice. It has been great to find a year-round jazz program for voice.

In fact the whole experience has been wonderful and I'd highly recommend it to jazz students living within driving distance of Boston. Like the classical program, all classes meet on Saturday, which is perfect since we are about an hour away. My daughter has learned a great deal about jazz and comes home singing and listening to various jazz artists every week. Even though she started the program this year as a high school senior, she is working toward a Level 3 Jazz Certificate.

One thing that really impresses me is how much the faculty cares about college/conservatory admissions. They have provided tons of helpful advice and assistance. For example, we needed a live rhythm section for a prescreen (NEC) and one of the Prep instructors was able to arrange it at a local studio. Another example is that her private voice teacher accompanied her on piano at her Berklee audition for early action. We've talked to the Prep faculty about college more than we've talked to her high school guidance counselor.

Good luck to your daughter with her auditions. What is a Level 3 Jazz certificate? Is that specific to NEC or more in general for Jazz?

It is specific to NEC, giving the students something to work towards. There is also a special recital she will get to perform at the end of the year.

Congrats on your D’s acceptance to Berklee! That’s where my daughter is (jazz voice/piano) starting in January.

Thanks, SnowflakeVT! Congrats to your daughter, as well. It’s an exciting time but also very stressful with all the extra process associated with music programs (prescreens, auditions, etc.) I’m grateful for all the advice posted in this forum.

Do you think applying to a contemporary music program is more competitive or less competitive than classical? There seem to be many more classical programs but also many more classical students.
