I'm planning to take 3 semester of community college in California before transferring to a University of California school. My top choice being Berkeley.

Some things that makes me unique. I'm 28 years old and have been working for the past 10 years. I've never stopped living with my parents and have never attended a four year university. To say the least, I'm alot more motivated than your average student. I have high hopes of acing every course.

I know I can use assist.org but I really appreciate the family atmosphere in these forums. What community college would be the best fit for my goals? I care nothing about the college life...only in the fact that it would get me to a top school in the end.

Let me know please if you have any questions. I'm fairly new to this myself and need to pick one soon before this spring semester starts. Your help and input would be greatly appreciated.

just fyi, that’s not really unique and you don’t sound very motivated…living with your parents at age 28, and you haven’t gone to college yet. You say you have high hopes but i’m guessing you haven’t gone to school in 10 years which will make it hard for you.

community colleges are basically the same, just don’t go to one in a ghetto location. It would be better to go to a ‘real’ college like a csu if you can unless you can’t afford it be.

I think haltanu was a little harsh. While it may not be unique in a good way that you are attempting to continue your education a decade later, or that you don’t show much independence while living with your parents, the fact of you coming here to search for answers shows some cognitive thrust to WANT to succeed.

But it is true, most CA CCs are generally the same. Sure some are better than others, but the main thing to look into for your situation would be what type of TAG (Transfer Admission Guarantee) programs they have with the UCs. Following one of those programs will be your best bet on being admitted as a transfer student. Be advised though that to fill the requirements for TAG may take more than 3 semesters. You should meet with school academic counselors often and have them help you stay on track.

Best of luck.

If your top choice is Berkeley then you should go to a cc that feeds into UCB.
However any cc will do. If you got a 3.0+ in high school you can get into the honors program and get priority registration.
You need to keep in mind you have not been in school for a long time and thinking that you are going to be able to pull straight A is foolish.
Another thing is that you probably will not be able to finish in 3 semesters. CC are facing huge budget cuts and have high volumes of students who all want to transfer as soon as possible. However I do wish you the best of luck :)
