I really need to find a very safe school to apply to, but with my GPA I'm finding it difficult to find a school on the East Coast that I could call a true "safety" school. I'm hoping for something in the Washington D.C. area that offers a Political Science major. Location is not nearly as important as having the Poli-Sci program.

My weighted GPA is 3.28, unweighted is around 3.02.

I did well on the SATs my first time (CR660, M680, W640, CR+M1340, Composite 1980) and very well on the ACTs (Math and Science 30, English and Writing 34, Composite 32) and I feel very confident about my scores on the most recent SATs (possibly above 2100).

My issue with finding a good safety school is that I would prefer to have heard of it before. It needs to be a big-ish school.

Any suggestions???

How much can your family afford? What is your home state?

In addition to your budget, tell us what your match and reach schools are so we can identify comparables.

elizabethtown college

From Pennsylvania and the cost isn’t really a huge issue.

Applying to:
Boston U - ED - Match/Reach
Pitt - Match
George Washington U - Reach
American U - Match
University of Florida - Match
University of South Carolina - Match
George Mason - Match
Possibly University of South Florida - Match/Safety

Try Temple. Your tests are better than Temple’s average, though GPA is slightly less than the average. Definitely biggish with large regional alumni network and proximity to Amtrak, Boltbus, and Megabus. State-related, so you’ll get in-state tuition.

For West Chester, scores are much better than average, and grades are just about average. Again, you’re in-state.

Your test scores (but not grades) also look good for Rutgers and Delaware, though you’d be out of state.

My mom graduated summa cum laude from Delaware so I think I’ll apply there. Thanks for the help.

I’m also a National Merit Scholarship Commended Student, if that makes any difference

^ Unfortunately NM Commended doesn’t do anything for you.

Towson University. From their web site:

What GPA is Towson University looking for?
We look at your weighted GPA as well as your curriculum and school profile. We prefer to see a B or B+ average. Last year, the middle 50 percent of students admitted had a GPA range between 3.20 and 3.78. That means half of the students admitted to Towson fell into this range, but we admitted 25 percent of our students above and below this range, too.

You are middle 50 in weighted GPA and >75th percentile in standardized test scores. If you don’t have a felony conviction you are good to go.
