Hello everyone, i'm looking for a good college in VA to attend. I live in Virginia and i would like to get go to one thats not in Virginia but just incase i need to apply to 2 colleges in Virginia.
About me:
I live near Norfolk, VA
I'm 17
African American
Male
GPA: 3.41
SAT: 1540
Take Honors Classes
My current grades now: I have all A's, grading period ends in 4 days.
I don't do sports but i have joined some clubs and did volunteer work
I've held 2 jobs while in high school
Single Parent home
Dad is in Jail
low Income

Now that you know a little about me hopefully you guys can help me out with choosing a great college to go to. My first college choice in VA is James Madison. Does anyone know any other schools i could possibly get into? I would like to stay away from the Hampton Roads area and attend some what of a prestigious college (Nothing like NSU, or Liberty).
I would also like to major in medicine or become a doctor. Minor in business or Law.
I just want to succeed and hopefully go far beyond that.

Keep Hampton Roads on your list because you can save $ by commuting. Go to the financial aid forum and look at the sticky threads for merit aid. You might qualify at some HBCUs.

I will assume the posted SAT number is a three-test score (R-M-W).

If that is the case:

George Mason
Virginia Commonwealth
Old Dominion and Christopher Newport (but you did say you didn’t want to stay in the Hampton Roads area)
Longwood

Yes, Erin’s Dad has a good suggestion, look into merit aid programs at HCBUs. Have you looked at Howard? Their medical school is excellent, so I imagine that their undergrad has good resources for a pre-med student as well. Plus, it’s a nice distance from home for you…enough to spread your wings, not so far that travel is expensive or difficult.

Congratulations on getting all A’s this quarter! Very good work.

Let me second what BossyMommy said: Howard is very generous. I can’t tell from your stats if Howard would be able to help you, but here’s the url for their merit webpage:

[Grants, Scholarships & Fellowships - Howard University](http://www.howard.edu/financialaid/grants_scholarships.htm#Freshman)

p.s., more schools than not are going to want to know your critical reading + math score, and Howard is one of these.

p.p.s., persevere with your dream, and tell your mom and grandmom that Howard’s not that far away from norfolk, there are lots of other HU students from norfolk, and you might thrive there. If I can answer any questions about Howard for you or your mom, click on my id and pm me.

Check out Mary Washington (NOT a private women’s college and good for premed)

I hope you’re applying to Howard and Morehouse :). There are plenty of colleges that would be interested in your application so if you need ideas, just ask. :)

By the way, you don’t major in premed. You major in whatever you want AND take a set of courses in biology, physics, chemistry, math, biochemistry, English, psychology, sociology, perhaps neuroscience and probably further science classes, in which you have to maintain really high grades. You must be involved in research, intern at hospitals or in the medical field. Your GPA, your “science GPA”, and your results on a 6 hour long standardized test called the MCAT define your basic probability of going to med school, and the research/internships refine about where you’ll go.

VCU and Old Dominion because they have med schools.

Thank you guys i will most definitely be looking into Howard. More suggestions would be great :)

You can probably get into Roanoke College (which is a few miles away from the city of Roanoke)- however, I can’t be sure you would be able to afford it. Try their net price calculator.

+1 on good for premed. One of my dad’s former coworkers has a son who went there, son is now in a radiology residency.

Cool Mary Washington looks good, btw price is not a concern right now :)
