I am an alto and since the (evil) musical theater world has doomed us altos to ensemble roles (so much so that I have half a mind to write my own musical where the alto is the lead and the soprano is the villain), I can’t find any good audition songs ever. The problem is that our (possible) next musical will be Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson and there is some confusion about what songs would be appropriate to sing for an audition. I asked my theater teacher what audition songs she would recommend and she said to do an actual rock song, not musical theater song. I was so excited because rock songs are my specialty because altos are more prevalent in rock songs than sopranos, but then I asked the director and he said a song from a rock musical. Now I am back at square one and have no clue what to do. Could you guys suggest one? I would prefer one by a female, but I’ll be open minded about a male one. Thanks.
21 guns from American idiot - a combo of both (and good for an alto )
I’m really old - anything from Rock of Ages??
Anything from “Tommy” by the Who. Or something from “Jesus Christ Superstar”.
Acid queen…one of my favorite audition songs ever!!
Morticia in Addams Family is an alto, there are some parts out there. Do something from Heathers or Jasper in Deadlan.
Are there alto parts in Carrie or Batboy?
