Anybody wanna help me out? I have no extracurriculars and im a senior :(
Im wondering if its better to have like 2 days of charity work than not have any, in the eyes of college admissions? And, Is it bad that I only played a sport, basketball, for 2 years and quit? I am soo screwed when we have to apply because I have no REAL extracurriculars that im really into or passionate about. I am going to get a job and start martial arts but thats nothing compared to like 50 hours of community service. Someone, ANY1 give me advice and plz answer my questions. :(

Hmm. Just try to get a leadership position. Or figure out a good light why you haven't... Are you helping out at home a lot or something? If so, you might need to expand on where your time has went. Get involved SENIOR YEAR. A lot.

Im just not into charity work or clubs honestly, so I didnt do any lol. Stupid mistake, and now Im freaking out because college applications are coming so fast...Doesnt it look bad either way for me? Because I havent already done stuff and it looks bad to do too much all in senior year

Yeah, a bit bad... Really, I have no ideas other than what I wrote.

thanks asdfjkl1 :( tear

Hey, why don't you volunteer at your local library? It's easy, air-conditioned, and fun.
Well, I enjoy it.

I tried but theres a waiting list

weird my post is above yours but I did it after you. weird.

Weird, indeed.
There's a waiting list to volunteer at the library?
Hmm...what about at the hospital?

yeah theres an even bigger one for the hospital

Err...this is stretching it a bit, but can you write well? Go to your local newspaper and ask if you can act as a freelance writer. It looks great for college and there's a chance that you may get paid.

You can also try volunteering at your local church/syangogue/mosque/whatever. Or, possibly at the soup kitchen. If all else fails, get a job.

RobyGlen, dude, you don't wanna blow off an entire summer doing nothin', do ya? Go out and volunteer or learn how to cook or read or join a chess club or try finding a job--it's a good idea to get a job before senior year to get some work experience. Don't worry about how you'll look to colleges, just get off the couch and do what you like to do. If you don't know what you like to do, then try something new for a while and then see whether you like it or not. Anything counts on your application. I mean, your life is ticking away, and since you're the only person you'll be living with for your entire life, you owe it to yourself to be as interesting a person you can be.

dchow, dude, i have a job now!!! :) I work at target and im gonna join a chess club (USCF). Thats crazy, like you told my future or something. Thanks 4 the advice. Hopefully colleges like what I enjoy doing like martial arts, chess, and sports.... I was just wondering if its super bad to have no extracurriculars that focus on a community, because all the things I do are for myself. Oh n dchow im not a couch potato but thanks 4 being more assertive I guess.

That's great! It's kind of funny hearing you now compared to how you sounded in your first post. Yeah, it's certainly not a good thing to put nothing down on your extracurricular activities, because college admissions people will look at it and ask themselves, so this guy doesn't do anything??

But I'm glad that's not the case. Also, while you don't do much charity work or anything, it doesn't mean that you're selfish or don't care. It just means that your heart is more set to doing things for your personal enjoyment, and that's perfectly fine. When I was in high school I did some volunteer work and my job helped part of the community, but I spent way more time doing things for my personal enjoyment. Okay, that sounds like I don't enjoy helping others, but I just really enjoy my hobbies, so I do those way more. And you work at Target, so when you think about it, that's good for the community, and for your pocketbook. But yeah, putting nothing down on your EC list really would make it seem like you're a couch potato. I mean, that's what it's about--doing things you like to do. That's what 17-year-olds should be doing.

Now im not worried about extracurriculars. Its great to know that information. Thanks alot
