Extra Curricular Help!

Hey guys. I'm a rising senior, so I'm obviously thinking about the process of applying for college next fall.

I think I'm pretty strong in most aspects- high GPA, decent ACT score, etc. The only thing is, I'm really lacking strong extra curriculars. I basically did nothing freshman and sophomore year, and I don't have anything that impressive Junior Year. (NHS, mentoring, drama crew, volunteering at the library- all pretty common things.)

Is there anything I can do this summer, and beginning of senior year, that would really stand out during college admissions and make up for my lack of extra curriculars?

Forensics (you know speech and debate) If your school is like mine you’ll have some novice tournaments in the Fall and probably continue with it till march it’s a major commitment it but finaling at a tournament looks really good. Speech is a major commitment though. I was at school till 5:30 4 nights a week, with tournaments every other weekend.

I was in the same situation as you. Are there any more volunteering projects you can take on? Maybe a local animal shelter is looking for someone to help walk their dogs, or some people in your community are looking for help on various projects (cleaning, painting, etc). You could try participating in GuluWalk this fall, or you could try founding a club at your school. I also put on my app that I participated in National Novel Writing Month (this takes place in November; it’s very ambitious but lots of fun if you’re into writing). You can come up with lots of ideas if you brainstorm for a while.

Try getting an internship in a field that you are interested in.

Interested in dentistry/doctors? Call up a family friend or local clinic and ask to shadow and doctor/dentist because you are interested in the field

Try to get more involved in all the things you already do, rather than joining new things. (That can include RAlec’s intership suggestion if it’s an internship in a field you have a prior demonstrated interest in.)
