Which school would you choose between Stanford and Caltech if you are majoring in Mech E? and why?

woah...you're still deciding?!?!
well both schools have great programs...so it's just up to what you prefer. the two schools strike me as very different, so it just narrows down to where you feel the most comfortable.
academically-speaking, it's not too big of a deal. Stanford is very well-rounded, so you can explore basically any areas of study. That may be something to keep in mind. Caltech, on the other hand, would probably have a strong focus to your major, which streamline your options. This could be good if you're DEFINITELY going to be an engineer. But again, you'll get a great education anywhere...it just really depends on where you feel that you'll be more comfortable.

depends on your personality.

what staticsoliloquy said

Like smiliekat said, if you are absolutely set on becoming engineer, Cal Tech would be best. However, if you still want to explore your options a little, I would go with Stanford. Personally, I would choose Stanford because it's really good for everything.

Both are academically respectable, so I would go with stanford, since stanford students are on average happier than caltech students, and it would give you more of an opportunity to live a balanced life.

I would probably go to Stanford, just on gut instinct. It's a personal thing really.

I think you should go to Stanford.

I'm not the expert, but i'd choose stanford too.

I broke a drunk guy's nose at Caltech... amusing and I don't think he remembers me but yeah, kinda interesting, that would be my only reservation about Caltech.

Otherwise, Caltech people are so friendly and it's a pretty tight knit atmosphere. I really enjoyed my time there especially the volleyball games and random bread-chunking and floating that took place at Ruddock.

Oh yeah, there are plenty of friendly guys that carried my luggage up to my dorm for me, gave me unofficial tours of the campus, and invited me to activities and eat dinner with them. Did I mention they were HOT?!? If you're a girl, you don't get that type of treatment at Stanford.

Oh yeah, then I got accosted my another drunken Caltech boy that repeatedly stated, "You should come to Caltech because we've got boys. If you like guys with muscles, we got them... I'm pretty though, I'm pretty, Don't you THINK I'm pretty???" Luckily, he was a senior and I'm pretty sure that type of stuff happens at Stanford too.

LOL! And I was wondering - 'why the hell would they do that' :p

Speculative generalization

I wonder if that is one of those things that only happens at elite colleges... here at MIT, people are generally very willing to help out prefrosh/new freshmen (or anybody, really) with directions, advice, etc (hence, I suppose, all of us on CC).

I've always sort of wondered if this was because so many people at elite schools were made fun of when they were younger for being smart (including, most certainly, me)... maybe there's a drive to be helpful to other smart people because they're so unlike the idiots we all knew in HS.
