Need advice on how to proceed

I’ve attended two other community colleges (other than the one I’m starting at this fall.) and attempted around 60 credits between the two between 2003 and 2006 with the eye of transferring to a UC or CSU. I flunked out of the last community college for not finishing the credits I’d attempted over a specific period of time (they told me that I would not be permitted to register for the fall unless I appealed the decision, but advised that I not and to re-register as a ‘new student’ in a year and to consider whether I was dedicated to college education or not during that time).

I completed 26 transferrable semester units during that time.
After receiving that letter, I decided to move in with the guy that I’d been dating long-distance at that time who lived in a different state. I began working and we became engaged. Then, I became pregnant and became a SAHM.

My child will be two in September and I felt that it was time to attempt to resume college and try to make a fresh start with an eye to transfer to University of Nevada, Reno.

Here is my question:
I’ve switched to Music- Vocal Performance as a major and am planning to complete my major requirements with an eye to transferring.

I wonder if it is possible (or at least acceptable) to simply ‘begin with a clean slate’ and start my AA and transfer preparations over again while attending this new CC?
Or should I request my transcripts from my previous colleges and have those units counted?

I am planning to take 14 units this semester, take four CLEP exams during the intersession (History, Econ and Psychology) and several additional units during the Spring Semester in the eye of completing my AA in June and transferring to UNR next fall.

My concern is how will UNR look at my transcripts from my previous colleges as they are filled with F's and W's? Unless I complete all of my courses at my new college with A’s there is no way that I would be able to attain the 2.5 minimum GPA for admission to UNR, which concerns me greatly.

My cumlative GPA from my other community colleges sits at a 2.1.

Any advice on how to proceed?

My first inclination is to submit those other transcripts, work hard while attending my new college and hope for the best.

Bringing up this post.

work very hard from now on and tell them about your situation…

the main things you need to realize is that you wont get anything for free, it will take work, and that you have a kid now, so youre working hard for the both of you :)

also, just out of curiosity, what kind of jobs are you looking at with that major, i am honestly asking out of curiosity because i dont know anything about the major and how the job placement etc is :)

I am planning to apply to Cantorial School with the goal of becoming a Cantor.

Any other feedback/thoughts?

UNR? As in the University of Nevada Reno? Don’t worry about it. Are you going to TMCC? If you do well now you will get into UNR without any problem. It is not competitive at all.

Not attending TMCC.

I also found out (thank you GOOGLE!) that any person who graduates from a Nevada CC with an AA will be accepted to UNR…so my problems are moot.

Good luck! It’s too bad that you aren’t going to TMCC. Dr Gifford teaches philosophy and music classes and is seriously one of the most amazing people I have ever met. I’ve taken a few classes from him and would recommend him to anyone.

I graduated from TMCC (supposedly) in May. I say supposedly because they still haven’t updated my transcript. The school is great and the teachers are great, but the administration really sucks.

Anyway, I’m sure wherever you are going is just as good. I have a lot of friends at UNR who are happy there, but I’m heading east.

I’m actually at WNC. Its going to be my first semester there (have been fighting for recognition as a NV resident since I moved here some years ago…but not having standard proof of residency kind of made it a PITA…didn’t have a driver’s license, utilities were in my husband’s name, no other bills in my name, didn’t have a full-time job…ecetra.) so I hope for everything to go pretty smoothly.
