Need Advice!!!

Hey, everyone. I am in a huge pickel right now. Recently, my school has been on high alert because of numerous cases of swine flu in the building. Actually, our administration was determining whether or not to close the school for three days to disinfect it on Monday. This is where the problem lies...I am never usually sick, but today during school I was getting a fever and horrible muscle pain. I went home and took a nap today, but could not see to get warm, and basically was shivering for two hours. I am not saying I have Swine, but it is a possibility. Also, a kid next to me in Spanish has Mono. I know it is spread by saliva to saliva, however, is it possible for him to have given me it from sitting at his desk? The desk get mixed up because we seperate during testing. I need some medical advice. Presently, my temperature is 101.1 degrees C.

The worst part is yet to come. I have my last ACT for Mich on Saturday, and if I feel as horrible as I do now, there will be no way I could take. I have taken the ACT two previous times, and I got a 29 both times. I know these scores are not great. However, my school has a program that tracks student's statistics and most had around a 30, but there GPA was about .07 lower than mine. I have been studying for this test everyday for the past month and it is terrible knowing I may not have a chance to take it.

I am just looking for some advice. Thanks a lot, Ticonderoga

my peice of advice man is things are NEVER as bad as they seem they are. Its an unfortunate situation, but your ACT score isn’t THAT bad so relax. I know plenty of kids who have gotten in with 29/30’s.

Take some motrin or cold medicine and do your best to forge off the symptoms until after the test. Get as much sleep as possible between now and saturday.

I believe I will be going to the doctor’s office tomorrow to see if they can determine anything. I hope I feel better. I really want to increase my chances of getting in.

or you can just take another act test another time and apply regular decision if all hopes are lost.

Yea, good point. I am averaging about 31 composite score. What do you think would be better? Reg decision with a estimate of 31 composite or early action with a 29? Thanks everyone, chris

EA with a 29 ftw: worse that happens is that you are deferred and you can retake yor ACT…what’s GPA and rank? (weighted now; you do know that, right?)

nm: just checked your old posts: you should be fine; don’t wait until RD

Thanks a lot, Rodney. That was reassuring. My test scores for SAT/ACT have always been low compared to my peers of the same stats. I feel it is a combination of undiagnosed ADD and my personality as a very energetic person. I have a hard time being able to sit at a desk for four hours and take an exam. I can barely stay focused in a class for forty-five minutes, haha. Hopefully, my symptoms go away, and I was just lucky with a cold. If not, I will apply EA and hopefully get in. Thanks a lot everyone, Chris.

Just rest up, you’ll likely be feeling a lot better by Saturday. Just keep taking tylenol/advil/motrin/whatever you like and relax until then. I got such an awful stomach ache in the middle of my ACT that I nearly had to walk out, but you’d be surprised what your body will do for you when you are determined to get something done. :stuck_out_tongue:

I got mono at the same time as my cousin just after we’d gone to a concert together, so it’s really not likely I didn’t get it from her, but we definitely didn’t make out. :stuck_out_tongue: And we didn’t share any drinks or anything either. So I’m not sure how I got it. Strange things like that happen sometimes I guess. I wouldn’t jump to the mono conclusion though, you could very well just have the flu and have it clear up in a couple days.

So, my doctor basically said that I have the Flu, maybe even Swine because it has been around my school. However, true confirmation will not come in until the end of next week when they test my culture. My doctor told me straight up that it would be morally wrong to go take the ACT because I am “so infectious” and I have a big chance of infecting everyone in the testing center. My temperature at five when I was at the doctors was 102.6F.

It seems like I will be applying EA with a score of 29 on my ACT. It is just really disheartening that I spent my summer and part of fall studying for this test. I really felt I could confidently pull it up to a 32 composite. I think in the additional information part of my application that I will tell Michigan that I got the Flu and could not take the test. Hopefully, they are understanding and put more weight on my class rigor and essays. This really sucks though since I am out of state and this is my number one. Sorry for the rant, I am just so frustrated I had to get sick right before my test.

It’s definitely better not to take the test when your sick and you might still get accepted with the 29 anyway…or deferred at worst. Then you can take the ACT at the next sitting and send admissions a letter updating them about your new scores. Take care of yourself and feel better.
