Need advise on cc transfer to UCs, USC, etc...help!

thanks! Maybe this is a no-brainer but, if after applying to transfer to USC the coming feb, and I get accepted into their poli sci major, should I take it? USC’s poli sci major is tied with UC Riverside in 54# I think…so I shouldn’t worry about the courses that aren’t articulated under assist?

Sorry guys, I stayed up too late watching Band of Brothers hahaha.

@goldencub, that’d be cool! I think I can finally register for a few classes next week at CalSO, so hopefully I at least get logic and 25A. And I have so many history units from CC that transfer that I’m going to try to double major in history and philosophy, and if I can’t then I’ll definitely be getting a minor in it. My first semester at Cal I’m taking a few history courses just to finish the prereqs for the major.

@Underdog95, I agree with goldencub about going to Mt. SAC for the poli sci courses if you can. It’s going to give you a better shot for sure. I didn’t do this because the classes aren’t articulated there either, and even if they were, because of how far I live from the pamona-ish area, it wouldn’t have been a good idea for me to attend two CC’s.

For your first semester, take comparative politics with Ross, English 103 with Eiland, PSY 103 with Brown, and an American Government and Politics class. I never took the American Government and Politics course because I took the AP Gov test in highschool.

If USC is the school you want to go to, then go. But you need to make sure you reach their unit count. But if you find that you’re getting really good grades, I’d say hold out for schools that have better political science programs for sure. And you don’t have to worry about articulation, but if you have the time, I would recommend attending Mt. SAC as well if they offer the classes that Citrus doesn’t.

Yep. Plus USC < UCLA or other UC’s

btw, can you skip English 102 after 101 and directly to 103 since 102 isn’t required? And when do the fall courses usually become available to view?

@goldencub I agree 100% haha.

@Underdog95 I’m almost positive you can. 102 and 104 are pretty much just for English majors I think. I can’t remember exactly when you can see Fall courses, but if you look at that link I posted earlier, I know it’s on there. Get comfortable with Citrus’ website, you’ll be using that a lot as well.

@Nediac What about James Hall? It seems from the review he’s better than Eiland…Also, would I need to take the placement test at Mt SAC? I would just be there for the one or two Poli Sci courses right? And about Psy, rick brown or malaika brown? I also remember something about one course satisfying two different things…what does that mean? I see the same courses listed under both area 3 and area 4 on the IGETC TP thing.

And about the stats courses, it says on assist that the course must be completed at UCLA, should I do it at UCLA or do it now at Mt SAC?

It just depends on what teacher you prefer by reading their ratings. I liked Eiland, but it’s up to you on who you choose. PSY 103 is a math class with Rick Brown. It focuses on social science statistics. And say you take a certain history course, and it satisfies two parts of IGETC. That means you can use it for one or the other, but I don’t think both. For that stats class for UCLA, the courses you’re looking at on assist probably aren’t good enough for the classes at UCLA. That is, the stats at Mt SAC or Citrus aren’t good enough to cover the class at UCLA. I’d recommend making a counseling appointment soon, just because I can help you with some stuff, but not everything because I don’t know enough. Sorry dude.

it’s alright, you helped me out a ton already, are all courses available during the summer and winter at citrus? counseling appointment at citrus? is it possible to make a counseling appointment at UCLA? or UCB? or just a counselor in general? I’m looking at the Transfer Pattern sheet, and under Quantitative Reasoning there’s + in front of Math 175, 190, PSY 103, what does that mean?!

also, how do you make an appointment with the counselor at citrus? Do you call in or is it on the citrus website?

Not all courses will be offered. A lot of your more general courses will, though. All you need to do for a Citrus counseling appointment is either call the counseling department or go in and make one. Going in to make one is a lot easier than calling, because for some reason they have more options in person. I’m not sure if you can make appointments at Cal or UCLA. Your best bet is to call and ask. I don’t know what the + means, but several of my classes to complete IGETC had a + in front of them.

@Nediac @Underdog95 I can’t find Mt Sac on assist, or anywhere? I did find Mount San Antonio College and that’s nearby, and the statistics course offered there DOES transfer to UCLA. Mount SA C (oh it’s an abbreviation ignore me) has more courses articulated for UCLA’s PolySci major.

so should I take the courses they offer? Or would just doing the ones at citrus be fine? Would I need to take the placement test again?! when should I apply to Mt. SAC, now or when I need the two courses, say the second term or third term?

Whenever you wish. I think it would probably be easier to take all the courses you need at Mt SAC at one time - so that one PolySci course, and that one Stats course. This is, of course, if you want to go to UCLA. UCSB’s requirements are different.

You can apply now, and just get all set up with their system. Applying to a CC doesn’t mean you have to take courses immediately.

Do you drive? I don’t know the area - would it be more difficult to get to from where you live to Mt. SAC than it would to get to Citrus?

My first semester I took classes at three different colleges, and going between them was really strenuous. I got all of the teachers that I wanted to take as a result, but going to multiple colleges at once isn’t the best. I don’t know. You’ll want to have the statistics class completed probably by the end of your second semester, just to get it over with and have it completed.

how many units is a normal amount to transfer? I know 60 is the minimum and 70 is the maximum, but how many units do people usually take before transferring?
